- CHARLOTTE SHARPE, b 1834, bapt C of E Leeds Tp.
Charlotte left home aged 13 and went to work for 4 years in
a large house in Sherbrooke. Around 1850, she moved to
Malden, Vt, 3 miles from Charleston, Vt. She married in
1856 at Charleston, Vt to Chauncey S Lamb, blacksmith and a
widower at the time of his marriage. In 1859 they moved to
Arlington, Minnesota. In the 1860s, they moved to
Trimbelle, Pierce Co, Wisconsin. Chauncey S Lamb died 1871
in Wisconsin. Charlotte was charged with the murder of 2 of
her children and of two neighbours, Mrs Irene Ottman and
Royal Garland. They died of strychnine poisoning. Charlotte
was found guilty at Ellsworth, Pierce Co, Wisconsin in June
1873 and sentenced to hard labour in the State prison at
Waupon, Wisconsin for life and one day, the first day of
which was to be spent in solitary confinement. In her
defense, Charlotte reported hearing voices guiding her
actions. This information comes from More Tales of the
Townships, article : 'The Murderess of Inverness', by
Bernard Epps, 1985, published by Sun Books, Lennoxville,
Que. Children:
- Oliver Lamb, b 1858

- Donald O Lamb, b 1860, d 1873, murdered
Note : In Charlotte's defense at her trial, she reported that she heard voices telling her to do these things. It is probable in today's medical terms, that Charlotte suffered from schizophrenia, a disease not understood in Charlotte's time.

It seems that I may have placed the wrong Donald with Janet Gray, as per the following correspondence from Harry Tatro -contact info available.
Malcolm Sillars, his wife Catherine (called Kate), and family of the Isle of Arran settled in the Scotish settlement at Pictou, Nova Scotia in 1817. The family group consisted of five or six children, two daughters-in-law, and five grandchildren. The children were Duncan, Mary, Catherine, Malcolm, Donald (called Daniel) and Margaret (called Maggie). There were Sillars in Pictou previously, but relationships are unknown. A James Sillars, thought to be an older son, became deacon in 1834, and elder in 1840; A Malcolm Sillars (Sr. or Jr.?) elder in 1840, of River John, Baptist Church in Pictou. Following his parent's deaths, Donald moved to Inverness, Megantic County, Que, where many other Sillars from the Isle of Arran had settled. There he settled and married Janet Gray.

Most of the Suitors in this data base have been in my collection since the late 1970s. The placement of some of them into particular families was made possible by:
1. Census records of 1831, 1851, and 1861 for St-Sylvestre and 1831 and 1861 for Megantic County.
2. Julien Bilodeau, ed., St-Sylvestre se raconte: 1828-1978, St-Marie de Beauce: Le Comité des Recherches Historiques, 1978. (Hereafter refered to as "St-Sylvestre se raconte.")

I am indebted to Linda Sorensen for her data on the family in Ireland, and to Steve Cameron for his data surrounding the Suitors involved in a murder, the subsequent trial, and transportation to Van Dieman's Land. The collateral lines of many of these families can be found elsewhere in the genealogy data base on this website.
Because an account of all of these Suitor families is contained in Ruth Suitor Miller's publication (Source No. 6 above), the following is only a skeleton of these families, including information that is not contained in Miller's publication, but with sufficient data to allow the reader to connect the people in this data base to the people in her publication.
In records for County Londonderry, Ireland the name is found variably spelled as Souter, Suiter, and Shutter. In records of St-Sylvestre, Lotbiniere County, Quebec, the name is variably spelled as Schutter, Shutter, and Shuter. It evolved in Megantic County and St-Sylvestre uniformly to Suitor, sometime after the 1851 census.
Several branches of the Suitor family, all Protestants from County Londonderry, Ireland, arrived in Lower Canada (Province of Quebec) at different times in the 1830s. They all settled on Ste. Catherine's Range, St-Sylvestre, Lotbiniere County. In 1855, sectarian violence erupted between Catholics and Protestants in St-Sylvestre, started by the murder by local Catholics, of a Catholic Corrigan who had turned Protestant. This incident, known as 'The Corrigan Affair,' prompted a number of Protestants of St-Sylveste to move their families across the line into the safety of Megantic County shortly after 1855, including some of the Suitors.
The Suitors are organized below into Family 1, and Family 2. The stragglers that are listed after Family 2, are people for whom there was insufficient data to place them positively into either of these two families. In "A Full Account of the Trial," it was reported that there were 18 persons by the name of Shuter living in St-Sylvestre in 1834, "with most of them related in some way."
FAMILY 1:
- JAMES SUITOR Sr., b 1777, from Gartenamoyagh, about 2 miles from
Garvagh, County Londonderry, and about 10 miles from Coleraine,
Ireland (as per Steve Cameron, from the trial record of James Suitor
Sr.). He married in Ireland to Mary 'Molly' Stuart/Stewart.
Source for their place of origin in Ireland is A Full Account of the Trial. According to the trial record, James Suiter Sr. and his family arrived at Quebec in July 1830.
The following is from Richard Torrens, First Garvagh Presbyterian Church, Parish of Errigal, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, revised, corrected and updated 13 January 2003, provided to me by Linda Sorensen:
'A List of the towns, families and individuals as taken in the visiting of the congregation of Garva, beginning in the summer of 1825 by James Brown A.M.' [Brown was a Presbyterian minister]: On page 112 for Gortnamaiagh, Parish of Errigal, family F312:
Jas Sutter
Mary Sutter
Willm Sutter
Robert Sutter
David Sutter
Thos Sutter
Margt Sutter
Jno SutterNote that one of James and Mary Sutter's children, James Jr. was missing from the above list, although born in 1813.
James Suitor and his family settled on Ste. Catherine's Range of St-Sylvestre, The lots assigned to James Suitor, under the name "James Shuter" were Lots 185-186-187-188-189-190-191.
Source for the above lot numbers: St-Sylvestre se raconte. For convenience, Bilodeau developed his own hybrid system for lot numbering in St-Sylvestre. A new government numbering system was introduced in 1854, but James Suitor does not appear in it.
1831 Census, St-Sylvestre, Ste. Catherine's Range:
James Schutter, [Sr.] farmer, 150 acres.
9 persons in the household, including James Sr., all Church of England, were listed as follows:
1 male, age 30-60, married [born between 1771-1801]
1 female, age 14-44, married [born between 1787-1817]
1 male, age 18-21, married [born between 1810-1813]
6 children under age 14, not married, no sex given [born between 1818-1831]
In 1831, the neighbouring farm was occupied by James Hagan or Hogan.
James' wife, Mary Stuart was still alive in 1851, as there is a record of a land transaction of 17 May 1851, where John Suitor, wife Agnes Miller, and Mary Stuart (wife of James Suitor Sr.) registered a lot for sale on Ste. Catherine's Range. (Source: Ruth Suitor Miller)
According to A Full Account of the Trial, on 6 December 1833, James Suitor Sr., and two of his sons, William, and James Jr. of Ste. Catherine's Range were in a dispute with a Mr. Living Lane, formerly from Maine, over the ownership of a piece of land on St. Frederick's Range of St-Sylvestre. Lane was building a log cabin on the lot in question, and the Suitors had planted a crop on it for several years. In the confusion of the dispute, Lane was shot and died the same day. The three Suitors were placed in the Morin Jail, Quebec City, then tried, and found guilty of murder on 29 March 1834. All three were to be executed by hanging on 31 March 1834. However, only William Suitor was actually hanged.
According to Steve Cameron, after a petition signed by eight residents of St-Sylvestre, the sentences of James Suitor Sr., and his younger son, James Jr. were reprieved on 4 March 1834, and they were given conditional pardons on 9 Dec 1834. However, the pardons somehow changed as an initial order was given for them to be transported on Dec 13, 1834. Yet they were still in the Morin Jail on May 24, 1837, when another order was given for their transportation. In May 1837, the were placed on the ship 'Ceres' bound for England for furtherance to an unspecified penal colony. On 16 November 1837, they were transported from England to Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania) on the ship 'Moffat,' (refered to in the Archives of Tasmania as Moffat 2, as this was the Moffat'second trip with convicts for Tasmania. The first stop was Deptford, England where 200 convicts were taken on, then 200 more convicts from the Chatham dockyard were put on board at Sheerness. The ship then stopped for 8 days in Portsmouth, and 10 days at the Cape of Good Hope, Africa. The voyage took 143 days before arriving at Hobart, Van Dieman's Land about April 1838. During the trip, the prisoners were guarded by new recruits being sent out to Sydney to join the 50th Queen's Own Regiment of Foot (after stopping at Hobart, Van Dieman's Land). The diary of one of the military recruits on board, Richard Pelvin, describes the voyage, and can be found at http://www.rootsweb.com/~austashs/convicts/moffattdiary.html
On arrival in Tasmania, a detailed description of each convict was recorded, presumably for ease of finding them in the event of an escape. The following is a description of James Suitor Sr., and James Suitor Jr., from 'Description List, con18/1/17, Archives of Tasmania, provided to me by Steve Cameron:
CATAGORY JAMES SR. JAMES JR. The following are the assignments of both men, from Appropriation List, con 27/1/7, Archives of Tasmania, provided to me by Steve Cameron:
CATAGORY JAMES SR. JAMES JR. Convict # 2531 2532 Height 573" 575" Age 61 25 Trade Ploughman Ploughman Where tried Quebec Quebec Sentence Life Life Native Place Derry Derry Appropriation Mr. D. Lord Mr. W. L. Goodwin Location Richmond Launceston Richmond is 25 miles north of Hobart Town. Launceston is in the north of the island.
Sentences could be shortened for good behaviour. For those sentenced to life, such as the Suitors, they could be freed/pardonned after 8 years work and good behaviour with 1 master, 10 years with 2 masters, or 12 years with 3 masters. Periodic reports on their conduct were made by their masters, and can be found in 'Conduct Registers of Male Convicts, con 31/1/44, Archives of Tasmania, provided to me by Steve Cameron, as follows:
James Shuter, the younger - He is reported as being of good character, and in good health. He was described as an accessory to the murder for which his brother was hanged. He is the son of James Shuter the elder, #2531. (Page 45 of above record source.)
Sept 20, 1843, in The Courier of Hobart reported that James Shuter of the Moffat was on a Ticket of Leave, as part of a government notice dated 20 Sept 1843. This ticket allowed convicts to live and work within a given district of the colony before their sentence was finished, or before they were pardonned. Prisoners could hire themselves out to work for themselves. They had to attend church regularly, and were still subject to regular reports. It is not clear which James Suitor this is, but James Sr. was assigned close to Hobart, so it may have been him. Source: Steve Cameron.
The conduct register for James Shuter the elder, describes him as of good character and good health. He was reported as married with *6 children, and had a wife, Molly, back in Quebec. He was reported as convicted for shooting a man in the back. He was quiet and well behaved while on ship board. The report of Mr. Lord of November 1839 describes him as "insolent and drunk, no penalty." In January 1840, Lord notes he was "drunk and insolent to his master," whereby he spent 6 days in the gallow bars. A later report indicates that he was absent without leave, whereby he was forced into 2 months hard labour on the roads. There were a few other incidents of drunkeness, but he was still recommended for a conditional pardon in August 1846, which was approved in October 1847. (Page 38 of above record source.)
*Note that James Shuter was reported above as having 6 children. He actually had 7 children, so I assume that he did not include son, William, since he had been hung at Quebec in 1834.
On Tuesday, October 5, 1847, the Hobart Courier reported that James Shuter the elder received a full pardon. The only condition of such pardons was that they were not allowed to return to Great Britain and Ireland, or to the Province of Canada. He was now 70 years of age. James Shuter, the younger, of the 'Moffat 2' was recommend for a conditional pardon in August 1847, but there was some delay. On January 30, 1849, nearly one and a half years later, the Hobart Town Gazette reported that James Shuter, the younger, was given a conditonal pardon, and not allowed to return to Great Britain, Ireland, or Canada. His release was also reported in the February 1849 edition of the Cornwall Chronicle. James the younger was now 36 years of age. Source: Steve Cameron.
While not known for sure where they lived after their pardons, one clue might be the record of a James "Suitor" who left Launceston on February 20, 1853 for Melbourne, Australia. He was reported as free from servitude, and traveling on the ship 'Palmyra.' There was a gold rush going on in the Melbourne area at this time. Source: Steve Cameron. This might be our James Suitor Jr.
Children of James Suitor Sr.:
- WILLIAM SUITOR, b 1809 in County Londonderry. William is listed with
his parents in the 1825 visitation of the parish of Errigal. (See
above under his parents James Suitor Sr, and wife Mary.) William is
not listed in Ruth Suitor Miller's publication.
William was found guilty of the murder of Living Lane, and was to be executed on 31 March 1834. The execution was delayed, and he was executed by hanging at the Morin Jail, Quebec City on 4 April 1834. As part of the charge, his body was to be dissected and anatomized. It is thought that he was not dissected. He was buried 6 April 1834 in the Protestant Cemetery, now St Matthew's Anglican cemetery, St. John Street, Quebec City. His burial was attended by the Presbyterian minister of St Andrew's Church, Quebec City. (Source: Steve Cameron).
From the National Archives of Quebec, Laval University, Quebec City, Microfilm M138/15 :
"William Suitor, aged 25 years, was executed here on the 4th March [April?] 1834, for the murder of Living Lane in the parish of St Sylvestre, seigneury of St Gilles on the 6th December 1833, and was buried on the 6th March [April?] 1834. He declared to the last on the scaffold that he was not guilty of murder. That though he----, he only intended to maim Living Lane in the left leg and that he never harboured malice against him or had a forethought of doing him evil. Myself, and I believe all the other clergy who attended him, are persuaded that he was only guilty of manslaughter. signed Rev James Harkness [Presbyterian]."
-
JAMES SUITOR Jr. b 1813 in County Londonderry, found guilty of the
same murder, but his sentence of hanging was commuted on 4 April
1834, at the Morin Jail, Quebec City. James Suitor was transported
to England in 1837, then on to Van Dieman's Land in November 1837,
arriving about April of 1838, as per the preceding information.
James is not listed with his parents in the 1825 visitation of the
parish of Errigal. (See above under David's parents James Suitor
Sr, and wife Mary.) James is also not listed in Ruth Suitor Miller's
publication. However, from A Full Account of the Trial, he was
clearly a son of James Suitor Sr.
The other children of James Suitor Sr.:
-
THOMAS SUITOR (born c1820, d 1883), settled on Ste Catherine's
Range of St-Sylvestre. He m 1st
on 25 Jan 1841 at the WM chapel, Ireland Tp., Megantic County to his
1st
cousin 3.5. MARY ANN McGINNIS, dau of James McGinnis and No. 3. Jane
Suitor of Family No. 1, of Ste. Catherine's Range. Witnesses at
Thomas' wedding were William and (wife) Barbara McGinnis (nee
Lowry). The witness William McGinnis was Mary Ann's sister.
Thomas m 2nd
in 1861 to ELIZABETH SUITOR (she possibly No. 1.3. of Family No. 2?).
Thomas had 16 children by his two wives. They can be found in Ruth
Suitor Miller's publication.
Thomas is listed with his parents in the 1825 visitation of the parish of Errigal. (See above under his parents James Suitor Sr, and wife Mary.)
Thomas was a witness at the trial of James Sr., William, and James Jr. Suitor at Quebec. It was reported that Thomas had planted crops for 2 years on the land claimed by Lane. It was also reported that there had been a charge laid earlier in 1834 by David Felker against Thomas Suitor, claiming that Suitor had threatened him as a result of Felker's trial allegations. Thomas Suitor had to provide a financial deposit to ascertain that he would not harm Felker (Source: Steve Cameron). And it was reported that there had been an earlier law suit against "Thomas Suitor and his father" for trespassing on the land claimed by Lane. Source: "A Full Account of the Trial." He is also identified as the son of James Suitor Sr. in Ruth Suitor Miller's publication.
1851 Census, St-Sylvestre: (family all Protestants)
Thomas Shuter Jr., farmer, b Ireland, age 31, married [b c1820]
Mariann McGinnis, born Ireland, age 29, married
James McGinnis, born St. Sylvestre, age 11[b c1841] [He went by the name Suitor, as did all of his children, as per "APMC."]
Robert Shuter, born St-Sylvestre, age 7
Jane Shuter, born St-Sylvestre, age 3
David Shuter, born St-Sylvestre, age 1
Margaret Shuter, born St-Sylvestre, age 5
-
ROBERT SUITOR (born c1812, d 3 Feb 1899 - buried at the WM chapel,
Leeds Tp. Burial witness - George Edwards. (Source: "APMC").
He settled on Ste. Catherine's Range, St-Sylvestre. Robert m in
1837 to Jane Lilly, b 1827, d 1894, bur Leeds WM. Jane's burial
witness was James Suitor. Source for burial "APMC."
Robert is listed with his parents in the 1825 visitation of the parish of Errigal. (See above under his parents James Suitor Sr, and wife Mary.)
1851 Census, St-Sylvestre: (all Protestants)
Robert Shuter, farmer, born Ireland, age 31, married [b c1823]

Mary Jane Shuter, born St. Sylvestre, age 13 [b c1838]
Eliza Shuter, born St-Sylvestre, age 9
Margaret Shuter, born St-Sylvestre, age 7
Note that Robert's age in the 1851 census is wrong by about 10 years. If age 31 as recorded in the census, he would have been born about 1823. However, he married in 1837 to Jane Lilly, at which time he would have been only 14 years of age, if born in 1823. His children can be found in Ruth Suitor Miller's publication.
-
JONATHAN SUITOR b 1823, bapt at First Garvagh Presbyterian Church, Co. Londonderry (Baptism record from PRONI, Belfast MI IP/57, Reel 2. He m in 1841 to Agnes 'Nancy' Miller.
Source for his Christian name and marriage is Ruth Suitor Miller.
Their marriage is found in "APMC." Nancy is the common nickname
of the time for the Christian name Agnes. Ruth Suitor Miller (page
3) places John here, as a child of James Suitor Sr., based on a land
sale transaction of 17 May 1851, where John Suitor, wife Agnes
Miller, and Mary Stuart (wife of James Suitor Sr.) registered a lot
for sale on Ste Catherine's Range. This is good evidence that John
was a child of James Suitor and Mary Stuart, but not proof positive.
John does not fit well into any other family, so based on the
evidence available he is placed here. They had 3 children, who can
be found in Ruth Suitor Miller's publication.
Jonathan is listed with his parents in the 1825 visitation of the parish of Errigal. (See above under his parents James Suitor Sr, and wife Mary. In St-Sylvestre records, he is recorded as John, versus Jonathan.
Two of the children were:
-
David Suitor b 1843, bapt St Andrew's, Inverness Village, Inverness
Tp.
Note that Ruth Suitor Miller shows the baptism date for David Suitor as 1843, and she introduces the possibility that this David Suitor m Jane Machell. However, the David Suitor that married Jane Machell was born 7 Feb 1850. See the unresolved stringers at the end of this Suitor account for the David Suitor who married Jane Machell.

-
MARGARET SUITOR b c1805. Margaret is listed with her parents in the
1825 visitation of the parish of Errigal. (See above under her
parents James Suitor Sr, and wife Mary.) She was actually the oldest
child in the family. Nothing more is known about Margaret, except
for the following record:
1851 Census, St-Sylvestre:
James Taylor, farmer, b Ireland, Presbyterian, age 74, married
Margaret Shuter, born Ireland, Presbyterian, age 47, married [b c1805]
Margaret is not included in James Sr's family in Ruth Suitor Miller's publication.

THOMAS SUITOR Sr. b c1795 in Ireland, d 1879, brother of No. 1. James
Suitor Sr. Thomas m Esther Miller, born c1812 in Ireland, d 1882.
Buried Leeds WM. Witnesses at burial: William Suitor and John
Suitor. In the burial record of Esther, it is indicated that her
husband was Thomas Suitor of St Patrick's Range. Burial witness
was Susan Suitor. (Source: "APMC, listed under Suitor). Thomas
and Esther arrived in St-Sylvestre in 1833. Their children can be
found in Ruth Suitor Miller's publication.

Esther Miller, born Ireland, age 40, married
Eliza Shuter, born Ireland, age 40, married [b c1812]
William Shuter, born St-Sylvestre, age 20 [b 1832]
Note:
From the above census, it is not clear if the child, William Shuter, age 20 is the child of Thomas Sr. and Ester Shuter, or the child of Eliza Shuter.Notes:
a. Under the 1854-56 civil lot numbering system for St-Sylvestre, Thomas Suitor owned lots 16-17. Under a new civil lot numbering system of St-Sylvestre of 1870-82, lots 620-621 was owned by Thomas Suitor (Source: Steve Cameron). In "APMC," under burials, there was a Thomas Suitor of Ste. Catherine's Range who died in 1879, buried Leeds WM. It is not known which of these records are for 1.3. Thomas or 2. Thomas -both above.
b. Under the 1854-56 civil lot numbering system for St-Sylvestre, Robert Suitor owned lots 15-20-21. Under a new civil lot numbering system of St-Sylvestre of 1870-82, lots 724-725-726-727 were owned by the heirs of Robert Suitor. And lots 713-714 were owned by Robert Suitor (Source: Steve Cameron). It is not known which of these lots refer to 1.4. Robert, or 2.1. Robert -both above.

Jane Suitor and James McGinnis lived in Leeds Tp in 1861, as per the 1861 census. The 7 children of Jane Suitor and James McGinnis, and their descendants can be found in Ruth Suitor Miller's publication. One of their children was :- MARY ANN McGINNIS m in 1841 to her 1st cousin, THOMAS SUITOR (No. 1.3., Family No. 1), of Ste. Catherine's Range, St-Sylvestre.
-
ROBERT SUITOR Sr., brother of No. 1. James Suitor Sr. Robert m
Martha Brawley. They remained in Ireland, and had 3 children. One
of their children was:
-
ROBERT SUITOR Jr. b 1815, m SUSANNAH SUITOR b 1815 (Most likely
Susannah No. 1.7. of Family No. 2?)
Robert Jr. was a witness at the Suitor trial in 1834, having been a witness to the murder of Living Lane. Robert Jr. came upon the scene as the argument between the Suitors and Lane was in full swing. Robert was identified in the trial as a "nephew of James Suiter Sr." Source: "A Full Account of the Trial."
Note that, in Ruth Suitor Miller's publication, she records Robert Suitor and Martha Brawley as a separate family, not connected specifically to the others, probably due to the lack of available data. I have placed them here, since their son Robert (4.1.) was identified in 'A Full Account of the Trial' as a nephew of James Suitor Sr. So Robert's father (No. 4 above, also named Robert) had to be a brother of No. 1, James Suitor Sr.
-
ROBERT SUITOR Jr. b 1815, m SUSANNAH SUITOR b 1815 (Most likely
Susannah No. 1.7. of Family No. 2?)

FAMILY 2
-
DAVID SUITOR Sr. b c1791 in Ireland. Note that Ruth Suitor Miller
states that David died on the ship coming to Canada. This cannot be
correct, as he was a witness at the March 1834 trial of James Suitor
Sr. and sons of Family No. 1. David is not in the 1851 census for
St-Sylvestre. In the 1851 census for St-Sylvestre, David's wife,
Margaret Armstrong, is identified as a widow living in the home of
her son's George and William Suitor.
So
David Suitor died sometime between late March 1834 (after the trial)
and 1851. David and wife Margaret Armstrong came from County
Londonderry, Desert Oghill Parish, Carbalintober Townland, arriving
in Quebec in 1833. They settled on Ste. Catherine's Range of
St-Sylvestre. Margaret Armstrong was born c1791 in Ireland, and died
in 1861 in St-Sylvestre, Quebec.
The following record showing David, wife, and children was provided by Linda Sorensen, from the visitation of the Parish of Errigal, First Garvagh Presbyterian Church, County Londonderry, beginning in the summer of 1825, p. 91, F246:
David Sutter, Margaret Sutter, Susanna Sutter, George Sutter, Elizabeth Sutter, William Sutter.
The following record was provided by Linda Sorensen, from PRONI: MIC/5A/5-98, record no. 1730 (Public Record Office of Northern Ireland:
1831 Census for County Londonderry, Ireland: Souter Suiter David Coleraine Desertoghill Carbalintober
The following is from Angélique Day and Patrick McWilliams, eds., Ordnance Survey Memoirs of Ireland, VIII,: East Londonderry, Vol. 27, "Memoir," by W. W. Lisgar, April 1836. David Suitor's family were on the Emigration List for 1833, in Lisgar's report, p. 20:
Shutter, David, 30, Margaret Shutter, 40, George Shutter, 15, Elizabeth Shutter, 14, William Shutter, 12, Martha Shutter, 8, Margaret Shutter, Junior, 5, David Shutter Jr., 2, Presbyterians, from Carbalintober to Quebec.
Some of the ages on the above record are out of sync, but it otherwise corresponds perfectly with the family of David Suitor and Margaret Armstrong of Ste. Catherine's Range, St-Sylvestre.
It can be assumed that David Suitor and his family arrived in St-Sylvestre in 1833, as per the above record, and because David Suitor testified at the murder trial of James Sr., James Jr., and William Suitor (Family 1) in March 1834, having come upon the scene of the murder while the dispute between the Suitors and Lane was in full swing. According to the trial account, David was not personally involved in the murder. David Suitor stated in his testimony at the trial that, "There is a trifling relationship between the prisoners at the bar, [James Sr., William, and James Jr. of Family 1] and witness [David Suitor]." Source: A Full Account of the Trial." So James Suitor Sr of Family No. 1., and this David Suitor of Family No. 2 were probably cousins of some degree.
Three Suitors, "George, William, and David Shuter" settled on Ste. Catherine's Range, St Sylvestre, lots 197 and 198. Note: No settlement year was given in the source re these lot numbers. Source: St-Sylvestre se raconte.
For convenience in his publication, Bilodeau created a hybrid numbering system for the lots of St-Sylvestre, but they were never official. These are three of the sons of David Suitor.
By an Act of 1854, a new system of lot numbering was introduced by the civil authorities of Quebec. St-Sylvestre is included in Cadastre Abrege de la Seigneurie de St Gilles, Beaurivage. It reflects the owners (not necessarily the residents). It can be assumed that the lots assigned under this system took a year of two to become effective, so 1855 or 1856 might be good dates to apply. Suitors of this family listed were:
- David Shutter, lots 18-19-25, Ste. Catherine's Range (No. 1.6. below, b c1831)*
- William Shutter, lots 26-27, Ste. Catherine's Range (No. 1.2. below, b c1825)
- George Shutter, lot 28, Ste. Catherine's Range (No. 1.1. below, b 1817)Source for the above lot numbers: Steve Cameron.
*It is assumed that No. 1.6. David Jr., (the son) is the one identified on this cadastre, since No. 1. David Sr., (the father) was thought to be dead by this time (not on the 1851 census). David Jr. married in 1855. William and George, two other sons of David Sr., were already identified in the 1830s lot assignments of Julian Bilodeau. And, and as per the c1855-56 cadastre they were on lots 26-27, and lot 28, respectively. It might be assumed then, that David Jr. (No. 1.6) was living on his father's homestead lots of the 1830s, namely lots 18-19-25, as per the 1855-56 Cadastre.
David Suitor and Margaret Armstrong are thought to have had 6 children, as follows:
-
GEORGE SUITOR b 1817 in Ireland, d 1889 Leeds Tp., Megantic County, m
in 1842 at the WM chapel, Ireland Tp., Megantic County to Susannah
Miller b 20 Sept 1824 near Newton, Londonderry. Susannah came to
Canada at age 17 in 1841. George and Susannah lived on Lot 197 or
198, Ste. Catherine's Range, St-Sylvestre, moving to Leeds Tp. in
1879. Susannah d 1916 at Gladys Ridge, Alberta, where at age 76 she
had gone to live with her son Joseph. Source: Gladys
and Dinton through the years.
As indicated above under No. 1. David, in the 1830s George Suitor was living, along with his father, and brother William, on Lots 197-198, as per Bilodeau's numbering system. (Source: St-Sylvestre se raconte.)
As per the new civil lot numbering system introduced c1854-56, George Shutter (Suitor) owned lot 28, Ste. Catherine's Range, St-Sylvestre. (Source: Steve Cameron)
Between 1870 and 1882, a new civil system of lot numbering was introduced. Under this system, George Shuter (Suitor) is listed as owning lots 732, and 735, Ste. Catherine's Range of St-Sylvestre. (Source: Steve Cameron) It would have been before 1879, as in that year George Suitor moved to Leeds Tp.
Source for the 13 children and grandchildren of George Suitor and Susannah Miller is Leeds and St-Sylvestre, pp 55-57, 60, 269-271, and in Ruth Suitor Miller's publication.
1851 Census, St-Sylvestre, Ste. Catherine's Range: (as per order of names listed in census. Ages given in census are "age on next birthday.")
George Shuter, farmer, born Ireland, Protestant, age 36, married [b 1816]
In 1851, the neighbouring farm was occupied by John Hagan or Hogan, son of James Hagan. James Hagan had occupied the farm next to Family 1. No. 1. James Suitor Sr in 1831. This would suggest, that George Suitor, and his mother, Margaret Armstrong were living on the same farm previously occupied by Family 1, No. 1. James Suitor Sr.
William Shuter, farmer, born Ireland, Presbyterian, age 35, married [b1817] [brother of George]
Eliza Shuter, born St-Sylvestre, Presbyterian, age 6 [b 1846] [ child of George]
William Shuter, born St-Sylvestre, Presbyterian, age 5 [child of George]
Rebecca Shuter, born St. Sylvestre, Presbyterian, age 3 [child of George]
Margaret Shuter, born St-Sylvestre, Presbyterian, age 1 [child of George]
Susannah Miller, born Ireland, Presbyterian, age 26, married [wife of George Shuter]
John Shuter, born St-Sylvestre, Presbyterian, age 1 [child of William]
Mary J. McKeag, age 19 [wife of William Shuter]
Margaret Armstrong, born St-Sylvestre, age 60, widow [born 1792] [wife of 1. David Suitor, and she was NOT born in St-Sylvestre as indicated in the 1851 census.]George Suitor and Susannah Miller had 13 children. They can be found in Ruth Suitor Miller's publication, and also see Linda Sorensen for detail. A biography of Samuel Suitor, one of George's sons, and his family can be found in Gladys and Dinton through the years.

Mary Jane was the dau of John McKeage (1810-1899), born County Cavan, and Sarah Maria Stevens, b1817 in New Hampshire, the 2nd wife of John McKeage. Sarah Maria was the daughter of Robert Stevens (1786-1859) and Jane Davis (1781-1867), and daughter-in-law of George McKeage (c1780-1847) and Letitia Nelson (1784-1883). For ancestry of the Stevens family of the Mayflower, contact Linda Sorensen.
In the 1830s, William Shutter, lived on Lot 197-198 of Ste. Catherine's Range, St-Sylvestre, along with his father David, and brother, George. (As per St-Sylvestre se raconte.)
In the 1851 Census for St-Sylvestre, Ste. Catherine's Range, William Shutter was living in the same household as his older brother No. 1.1. George. See the census above under 1.1. George Suitor.
In the new civil lot numbering system of 1854-56, William Shutter was the owner of lots 26-27 of Ste. Catherine's Range. (Source: Steve Cameron)
In a new civil lot numbering system introduced between 1870-1882, William Shuter, was the owner of lots 733-734, Ste. Catherine's Range. (Source: Steve Cameron)
William and Mary Jane Suitor lived in St-Sylvestre for 35 years before moving to Leeds Tp. c1885. They had 11 children, (5 boys, 5 girls, and one died as an infant), and can be found in Ruth Suitor Miller's publication, and also contact Linda Sorensen.
- ELIZABETH SUITOR b 1819 in Ireland. She may have married No. 1.3. Thomas Suitor of Family No. 1.
-
MARTHA ANN SUITOR b 1825 in Ireland, d 1890, of Ste. Catherine's
Range, St-Sylvestre. Married
2 Nov 1842 at the Methodist Chapel, Ireland Tp. Megantic County to
Alexander McKeage, b 1823 in Ireland, of Broughton Tp., Megantic
County, d 1903 in Tingwick, Quebec, farmer and trapper. Witnesses at
their wedding were Susanna Suitor, and John and Robert McKeague.
They lived first in Broughton Tp., before moving to Tingwick, Wolfe
County, Quebec.

Note: "APMC" has Martha's marriage record, (Marriages, p. 100) (as above), but local input added to the official record in the publication reports Martha as the daughter of "George Suitor [sic] and Margaret Armstrong." This is in error. She was the daughter of David Suitor and Margaret Armstrong. I have found no evidence to support a married couple named George Suitor and Margaret Armstrong. Martha Suitor and Alexander McKeage had 13 children. They can be found in Ruth Suitor Miller's publication. And also see Linda Sorensen.
- MARGARET SUITOR b c1827 in Ireland
-
DAVID SUITOR Jr. b c1830 in Ireland, d 1916, m in 1855 to Mary
McKeage, b 1838 in Broughton Tp., Megantic County, d 1923 in Gladys,
Alberta. They had 13 children.
In the 1830s, David Suitor Jr. is not listed on any lots of St-Sylvestre (too young to be a lot owner)
In the 1851 census for St-Sylvestre, David Suitor is not listed in any household.
In 1854-56, under a new civil lot numbering system David Shutter was the owner of lots 18-19, and 25, Ste. Catherine's Range. (Source: Steve Cameron) These were presumably the lots on which his late father, David Suitor had built his home.
In a new civil lot numbering system introduced between 1870-1882 David Suitor Jr. is not listed as an owner. (Source: Steve Cameron). By this time, David and his family were living in Broughton Tp. They had 13 children.

SUSANNA SUITOR, m 4.1. ROBERT SUITOR of Family No. 1.
Susanna appears in the family of David Suitor in the visitation of the First Garvagh Presbyterian Church, Errigal Parish, Co. Londonderry of 1825. (Record is above under her parents.)
Susanna also appears in the Latter Day Saints Family Search in an individual record submitted by Dan Savage, submission search 5963112-0119110105744, provided to me by Linda Sorensen. It is on LDS Compact disc #148, as follows:
Susannah Suitor, [Pin 4237155] birth 1815. . .Ireland, death 21 Nov 1888...Canada, Father: David Suitor [Pin 4237050] , Mother: Margaret Armstrong [Pin 4231934].
In Ruth Suitor Miller's publication she includes a letter of 15 August 1923, Lemesurier, R.R. 2, Quebec from John Armstrong Suitor to his 1st cousin Matilda (Suitor) King, in which John Armstrong Suitor layed out his ancestry, including the names of his grandparents. He reported his parents as Susanna Suitor, b c1815, d 1888 at Leeds Tp. -dau of David Suitor and Margaret Armstrong, and Robert Suitor, b c1813 - son of Robert Suitor and Martha Brawley (of Family No. 1.) In Family No. 1, Robert is No. 4.1. They lived in St-Sylvestre.
1851 Census, St-Sylvestre: (family all Presbyterians)
Robert Shuter, farmer, born Lower Canada [??], age 38, married [b c1813]
Susan Shuter, born Ireland, age 36, married, [b c1815]
Robert Shuter, born Ireland, age 16, [b c1836]
Martha Shuter, born Ireland, age 14 [b c1838]
Elizabeth Shuter, born Ireland, age 12 [b c1840]
Mary Jane Shuter, born Ireland, age 10 [b c1842]
David Shuter, born Ireland, age 8 [b c 1844]
Margaret Shuter, born St-Sylvestre, age 5 [b c1847]
George Shuter, born St-Sylvestre, age 3 [b c1849]
Jane Shuter, born St-Sylvestre, age 1 [b c1850]From the 1851 Census, it would appear that Robert Suitor and wife, Susannah Suitor arrived in St-Sylvestre sometime between 1845-1847. However, their first child, Robert, who was born in 1836, was baptized in 1836 at St James C of E, Leeds Tp., Megantic County, and the other children born 1838, 1840, 1842, and 1844 were also baptized in Megantic County. Source: "APMC." So it seems more probable that Robert Suitor and Susannah left Ireland before 1836, probably in 1833 or 1834.
