As a refresher, the Little family in question is as follows, Much of this updated materal of 2019 was provided by Steve Scott, Dale Wright, and Sherwin Little, and via Sherwin, the late Alfred Little (Sherwin’s brother). Further detail on the first five children of John Little and Margaret McCullough can be found in ‘The Little Family & the Ralston Family of Megantic County, Quebec, by Gwen Barry, revised edition March 2011. What is new here is the discovery via DNA tests of one, if not two new branches of the family, heretofore unknown, with possibly a third new branch via County Armagh records.

John Little I, b Co. Armagh (married c1789 in Ireland to Margaret McCullough, b c1766) They emigrated with their children, all born County Armagh, Ireland to Inverness Tp., Megantic County, Quebec in 1830. Their children:

  • 1. Jane Little b c1790 in Co. Armagh, possibly in or near Drumhillery Townland, Tynan Parish (m c1818 in Ireland to Henry Ralston I, b c1780 in Keady Parish, Co. Armagh). Their children:
    • Henry, John, Samuel, Mary Jane, James, Margaret, Thomas.
  • 2. James Little b 1798 or 1804 in Co. Armagh (m Nancy Agnes Woods). Their children:
    • Jane, Henry, John, Margaret, Agnes, Thomas, George, Robert. (These are the ancestors of Dale Wright, Jack Irvine Little, and Gwen Barry.)
  • 3. John Little II b c1805 in Co. Armagh (m c1825 in Ireland to Jane Irvine). Their children:
    • child –sex not known, female –name not known, Francis, Thomas, James, William
  • 4. Margaret Little II b c1812 in Co. Armagh (m 1st in Inverness Tp., Quebec to Robert Isaiah Wilson, m 2nd to Mark Scott, m 3rd to John Gordanier or variant thereof. (Margaret Little II and Mark Scott are the ancestors of Steve Scott.)

Margaret Little and her 2nd husband Mark Scott moved from Inverness Tp. to Melbourne Tp., Quebec sometime between the birth of their child Robert born 16 May 1838 in Inverness, and Margaret born 23 Dec. 1842 in Melbourne Tp., Quebec. Margaret Little II and Mark Scott moved back to Inverness Tp. sometime between the birth of their son Walter born Melbourne and John W. born Inverness Tp. (between 1845 and 1847). Margaret’s husband Mark Scott died in Inverness Tp. in 1859, and Margaret must have left for Barrie Tp., Frontenac Co., Ontario very soon after, as she remarried John Gordanier in Barrie Tp., Ontario in Nov. 1861

John Gordanier was born in Huntington Tp., Hastings Co., Ontario. All three of the marriage records of Margaret Little II can be found in the 2011 edition of “The Little Family and the Ralston Family of Megantic County, Quebec,” Evans Books, Gwen Barry (to Wilson - Document #77, to Scott – Document 78, and to Gordanier – Document 79 - all three records provided by Dale Wright) A copy of the 1861 census for the United townships of Barrie and Clarendon is attached, showing Margaret Scott, and her children James, Walter, Sarah and George, just before Margaret’s marriage of John Gordanier. A copy of the 1861 marriage record to Gordanier is attached. A copy of the 1861 census for Barrie Tp. is attached, showing John Gordanier with his new wife, Margaret Little II, and 5 of Gordanier’s children by his first wife. John Gordanier was listed in the 1865 Directory for Barrie Township.

It is likely, but not proven, that Margaret Little II-Wilson-Scott-Gordanier died in Pettis Township, Platte County, Missouri, in 1872, as that is where her husband John Gordanier, and two of his children by his first marriage (Caleb and Mary) were living in the 1870 Census for Pettis Township. See attached 1870 Census record for Pettis Township.

Margaret Little II Wilson Scott Gordanier’s children:

    • Eliza Jane Wilson b 29 Dec. 1832 in Inverness Tp, No other records were found for her.
    • John Scott born 1836 in Inverness Tp., presumed to have died young,
    • James Scott born 1840 in Inverness Tp., living with his mother in Barrie Tp., Frontenac Co., Ontario in the 1861 census. James married in Barrie Tp. to Elizabeth Morgan –a sister to John W. Scott’s wife Mary. James Scott is listed in the 1865 Directory for Barrie Township. They settled in Sanilac, Burnside Tp., Lapeer Co., about 1869. James and Elizabeth Scott are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Brown City, Burnside Tp., Lapeer Co. Michigan.
    • Robert Scott, This Robert Scott (born 16 May 1838 in Inverness Tp.) is a child of Margaret Little and Mark Scott, as per his baptism record (Document #81 in the 2011 edition of my book). As per Dale Wright, he married Emma Bishop, and they can be found in the 1861 census for Barrie Tp., Frontenac Co., Ontario. They had at least 7 children, and can be found in the 1871 and 1901 census for Barrie Tp. Robert Scott died 4 June 1914, and his wife Emma Bishop died 17 July 1918. They both died in the Rockwood Hospital, Kingston, Ont., and are buried at Harlowe United Cemetery.

The reference to a Robert Scott who married Hannah Gillis and Christiana Cascadden found in the 2003 edition of my book was removed in the 2011 edition, as they are not related to our Littles.

    • Margaret Scott –born 23 Dec.1842 in Melbourne, Quebec, Presumed to have died young.
    • Walter Scott -born 29 Aug 1845 in Melbourne, Quebec, He was living with his mother in Barrie Tp., Frontenac Co., Ontario in the 1861 census.
    • John W. Scott, born 1 May 1847 in Inverness Tp, m 3 Jan 1868 in Barrie Tp., Frontenac Co., Ontario to Mary Jane Morgan –a sister to James Scott’s wife Elizabeth Morgan. The are in the 1870 census for Sanilac, Burnside Tp., Lapeer Co., Michigan, having arrived about 1869. John W. and Mary Jane Scott are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Brown City, Burnside Tp., Lapeer County, Michigan. A biography of John W. Scott can be found at Document #83 in the 2011 edition of my book –provided by his descendant Steve Scott.
    • Margaret Ann Scott, born 1848 in Inverness Tp., died 1849 in Inverness Tp.
    • Sarah Scott born 1852 in Inverness Tp., was living with her mother in 1861 in Barrie Tp., Frontenac Co., Ont, as per the 1861 census,
    • George Henry Roe Scott born 1854 or 1855 in Inverness Tp. He was living with his mother in Barrie Tp., Frontenac Co., Ontario as per the 1861 census.

Most of the baptism records for the Scott children can be found in the 2011 edition of my Little-Ralston book. Margaret Little II had no known children by John Gordanier

  • 5. Elizabeth Little b 1801 in County Armagh. A 6 Aug., 1830 burial record in Quebec City for Margaret Ralston (daughter of Jane Little and Henry Ralston I), the witness signed the burial record as “Aunt Elizabeth Little.” In addition, the following record places her in this family as follows:

“Elizabeth Little, late from County Armagh in Ireland, aged 29 years, died on the nineteenth, and was buried on the twentieth of October, 1830. Witnesses: James Little – brother, and W. Henderson.” Source: Drouin Collection, ancestry.com, Anglican Cathedral Holy Trinity, Quebec City.

And the following possible, but unproven, other 3 siblings:

  • 6. William Little I, b 1796 or 1797 in County Armagh, came over in 1830, with wife Jane Caldwell, and lived in Melbourne, Richmond County, Quebec. William died in 1835 or 1836 in Melbourne. Placement here is tentative. (These are the ancestors of Shewin Little.) More follows on page 5.
  • 7. Thomas Little. He witnessed the burial record of the above William Little I’s (of Melbourne, Quebec) daughter Matilda at Levis, Quebec in 1830. William Little I had no sons old enough to have been the witness, so this possibly makes Thomas a brother to William I, and possibly a brother to the five Littles of Megantic County, and possibly born between 1791 and 1796 or between 1801-1811. Thomas is tentatively placed as No. 7 in the Megantic County Little family.
  • 8. Henry Little as per the following marriage record:
  • 1821, Oct 31: Marriage of Henry Little of 1st Keady - The Temple at Drumhilery, Tynan Parish, married to Anne Goodin (or Goddin?) of 2nd congregation Keady. Present : Jane Goodin, Anne’s father (illegible), and (illegible) Coole. Henry Little certified by Samuel Glasgow. Source: The original Drumhilery Presbyterian Register, held at the Presbyterian Manse, Keady Town, hand copied from the register by Gwen Barry in the 1990s. Henry Little was likely born in the 1790s. Placement here is very tentative.

Another Little record for 1st Keady at Drumhillery, with insufficient information to place: 1824, Aug 13: Marriage of Samuel Robinson and (illegible) Little, both of the old congregation of 1st Keady – The Temple, at Drumhilery, Tynan Parish. Present: her brother B. Kidd and Mr. Breakey (or Breaghy?) from Larne home and having his written request. Source: Original Presbyterian register for 1st Keady, Drumhillery, held at the Presbyterian manse, Keady Village, hand copied by Gwen Barry. (To have a brother surnamed Kidd, this Little woman either was a widow previously married to a Little, or she was a Little, whose Little mother remarried to a Kidd.)

Note: Drumhillery Townland, Tynan Parish, Co. Armagh was owned by the Earl of Caledon of Caledon Town, Aghaloo Parish, Co. Tyrone. All his lands were known as ‘The Caledon Estate.’

Re the above Drumhilery records: According to the late Gladys Patton, Mary Ann Henderson came to Megantic County from Drumhilery to join her brothers (although at least one of her brothers is known to have come from Caledon Town, Aghaloo Parish, Co. Tyrone). None the less, both were on the Caledon Estate. Gladys inherited the oil lantern that Mary Ann Henderson brought over on the ship from Ireland. Also, one of the Davidsons who came from Aghaloo Parish, Co. Tyrone to Megantic County married Susannah Mitchell at Quebec City. Susannah Mitchell is thought to have come from Drumhilery Townland, Tynan Parish, Co. Armagh. The Littles, Hendersons, Davidsons, and Wrights all settled on the 2nd and 3rd ranges of Inverness Tp., Megantic County about 1830.

Note that child No. 6. No. 7, and No. 8 above are not proven. However, there are a number of large gaps between the births of the above other 5 children. There may even have been other brothers and/or sisters who remained in Ireland, and/or who emigrated elsewhere.

When the first version of ‘The Little Family and The Ralston Family of Megantic County, Quebec’ was first published in 2001, the surname of Margaret, wife of John Little I was not known. So to find the family in Irish records, before they came to Canada between 1828-1830, I only had the surname Little to go by, without a clue as to which Parish of County Armagh the family came from. John Little I and Margaret and their children’s Christian names are very common, and could be found in any number of parishes of County Armagh. There was no way to determine which, if any, of those records were our Littles, and so I didn`t bother collecting a great many parish records, and no land records for Littles in Co. Armagh.

However, in 2011 Dale Wright found John Little I and wife Margaret (surnamed McCullough) in a marriage record of one of their children (Margaret Little II) in her 3rd marriage on Nov 18, 1861 at Barrie, Ontario to John Gardineer. In the marriage record, Margaret’s parents are listed as John Lytle* and Margaret McCullough, resident at Barrie. The marriage was witnessed by John Scott and Walter Scott -two of Margaret’s children by her 2nd marriage to Mark Scott.

*There is no significance to the spelling Lytle vs Little. Clergymen wrote what they heard. This is our Little family, without a doubt, and now we have the surname McCullough to add to our ancestry. Our Littles were spelled ‘Little’ in all of the Megantic Co. records.

The Littles, Scotts, and Irvines may have originated in Scotland as Border Reiver clans/families. During frequent wars between England and Scotland from the 1300s to the early 1600s, the people living along the border between England and Scotland grouped together in related families for security and for basic human survival. Their situation was aggravated by the system of inheritance (gavelkind), where all the sons inherited land equally between them, on the death of their father. This left insufficient land for each, on which to survive after many generations of land division. They went out as large related family groups on cattle raids, and other thievery. In 1587, the Heads of families who were border reivers/raiders were listed by the government on a Roll of Families/Clans, in an effort “for the quieting and keeping in obedience of the disorder subjectis inhabitants.” On this list were the surnames of Little in Middle March in Scotland, Scott in West March and Middle March in Scotland and Irvine in West March in Scotland. These two Scottish Marches were on the border with England, covering from the border northward in Scotland for about 40 miles. Middle March is roughly in Roxburgshire, and West March is covered by Dumfrieshire.

In 1603, when James VI of Scotland came to be James I, King of England, Scotland and Ireland, he banished many Reiver families to Ireland, where they became part of the Ulster Plantation. A fuller account of the Border Reivers can be found at Wikipedia at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Border_reivers The surnames of Little, Scott and Irvine can be found listed as Border Reivers on a number of other websites, as well as in the book “The Border Rievers,” by Keith Durham and Angus McBride, Osprey Publications, ISBN 9781855324176.

The only record that I have found for Tynan Parish and surrounding area for the period of the Ulster Plantation 1606-1630 was for an Irvine marriage in Tynan Parish in 1608 (tenant of Trinity College, Dublin). Otherwise the records for that early period are scant, with the earliest Little record being a 1685 burial in Tynan Parish, and for a Scott baptism in 1697 (both would have been tenants of the Maxwell family). It should be noted that there were Littles, Irvines, and Scotts in other parishes of Northern Ireland during the Ulster plantation of 1603-1630ish. During the 1640 major Irish Rebellion, people scattered to the wind. Some of the Ulster Planters were killed, some fled back to Scotland, and others moved to other parishes and counties of Ireland. Still others only arrived for the first time in Ireland during the 1640-1647 Irish Rebellion/Cromwellian War in Ireland, and they came to Ireland with Scottish regiments to put down the Rebellion, and stayed in Ireland at the end of the war in 1647. Others came a bit later as more Irish lands were confiscated from the Irish rebels. So, other than the Irvine’s it can’t be said if our Littles and Scotts were Ulster Planters (1603-1630ish), or if they came in or after 1647, whether border reivers or not.

THE FAMILY OF WILLIAM LITTLE I & WIFE JANE CALDWELL, & THEIR DESCENDANTS OF MELBOURNE, QUEBEC, HANOVER, N.H., AND POLAND, N.Y. (No. 6. Above)

Through a ‘23 and Me’ DNA test, Steve Scott (a descendant of Margaret Little II and her 2nd husband Mark Scott of Megantic County, Quebec) found two DNA matches in common with Sherwin Little (a descendant of William Little I and Jane Caldwell of Melbourne Tp.), through Steve Scott’s Scott/Little/Morgan lineage. The two matches were second cousins to Steve Scott, and 4th and 5th cousins to Sherwin Little. The ’23 and Me DNA test lists dozens of cousins in common between Steve Scott and Sherwin Little. According to ancestry.com DNA, Sherwin Little’s ancestry connection is through a relationship to a Jane Little, b. 1790 in Drumhillery, Tynan Parish, Co. Armagh, parents unknown. This is probably No. 1. Jane Little (b. c. 1790) of Megantic County who married Henry Ralston I. Drumhillery was the Presbyterian Mission of 1st Keady – The Temple.

Also Dale Wright, a descendant of the Megantic County Littles, had two matches in common with Sherwin Little, through two different branches of the Littles of Megantic County.

The above DNA matches connect Shewin Little’s ancestor William Little I of Melbourne Tp., Quebec to the Megantic County Little branches of Jane (married Henry Ralston), Margaret II (married Mark Scott), and James (married Nancy Agnes Wood).

As further evidence of the relationship between William Little I of Melbourne Tp. and the Megantic County Littles:

    • William Little I’s birth year of c1796 or 1797 fits easily into the birth years of John Little and Margaret McCullough Little’s children of Megantic County.
    • Margaret Little II (No. 4 of the Megantic County Littles) and her 2nd husband Mark Scott moved from Inerness Tp., Megantic County, Quebec to Melbourne, Quebec sometime after May 1840, and before Dec 1842. At least 2, if not 3 of their children were born in Melbourne between Dec 1842 and about May 1848. They returned to Inverness, sometime between 1845 and 1848. William Little I of Melbourne died in Melbourne in 1835 or very early 1836. Margaret Little II of Megantic County may have moved to Melbourne to help William I’s wife, Jane Caldwell out with her seven known children by William Little I, and her now 3 more children by her second husband John Simpson? Jane Caldwell Little and her 2nd husband John Simpson and the children moved to New York State about 1848-50, which is about the same time that Margaret Little and husband Mark Scott left Melbourne to move back to Megantic County. I can see Margaret Little II of Megantic County moving to Melbourne to help out a brother’s children (her nieces and nephews), but not so likely if William Little I was only a cousin.
    • It is also noteworthy that John Little (No. 3. of the Megantic County Littles –married Jane Irvine) named four of his children as Francis, Thomas, James, and William, just as did William Little I and wife Jane Caldwell of Melbourne, Quebec.

Based on the above DNA matches, and other suggestive evidence, it is highly probable (but not proven conclusively) that William Little I of Melbourne, Quebec was a brother (or certainly a cousin) to the Littles of Megantic County, Quebec, Therefore, I have tentatively placed William Little I (married Jane Caldwell as No. 6 in the Megantic County Little family.

The particulars of Sherwin Little’s ancestors are as follows (provided by Sherwin Little, except where noted otherwise):

    1. William Little I, born c 1796-97 in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, Died 1835 or 1836 in Melbourne Township, Richmond County, Quebec. Married about 1820 in Ireland to Jane Caldwell, born Ireland in 1797, died Poland, Chautaugua Co., N.Y. on 11 April 1884, aged 87. William I and Jane (Caldwell) Little came to Canada in 1830, This is evidenced by the burial of their child Matilda on 2 October 1830 at Aubingny, Levis, Quebec, wherein Matilda’s parents are recorded as “William Little, late of County Armagh in Ireland, and Jane his wife,” Parish records of the Quebec City area, commonly referred to those arriving in Quebec the same year as a family baptism, marriage, or burial, as “late of” somewhere. Whereas, those who arrived even one year earlier than a recorded event were not recorded as “late of” anywhere. This is borne out by several Henderson and Davidson marriages at Quebec City in this period. The year 1830 is the same year that the Little family of Megantic County, Quebec also came over from Co. Armagh. The burial record of Matilda Little is attached. On 20 May 1830, William Little I signed a land petition for land in Stanstead, Quebec. William Little I appears in a record for Shipton, Quebec in 1834, listing his residence as Melbourne, Quebec.

Note that there are several records available with a William Little signing documents in association with a large Little family in East Hatley, Quebec. It is doubtful if they are the William Little above. According to Dale Wright, there is a detailed history of the Bond Little descendants and ancestors on Find a Grave, provided it is correct information. They were in the USA in 1640 and the info seems to be based on a book, “The Descendants of George Little, who came to Newbury, Mass. in 1640,” by George Thomas Little, 1857-1915, published in 1882. They moved to Hatley, Quebec around 1800.

(Jane Caldwell Little married 2nd in Shipton, Quebec on 19 December 1837 to John Simpson, He was born in Ireland c1796, died between 1855-1860 probably in Poland, N.Y. Jane Caldwell Little and John Simpson moved to Poland, N.Y. sometime between 1843 and 1845. They appear in the 1845 Census for Poland Town, New York. Jane Caldwell Little and John Simpson had 3 children, all born Quebec (George, Eliza Jane, and Edwin)

The children of William Little I and Jane Caldwell are as follows:

1.1. William Little II, born 11 August 1821 in County Armagh, Ireland. (despite the 1850 census for Poland, NY reporting that the was born in Canada.) He came with his parents from Ireland to Quebec in 1830. One of William’s grandsons (Edwin Addison Little) claims that he was born in Northern Ireland. Census records are notoriously inaccurate about ages and places of birth. ) William died in Ellicot, N.Y. In Dec. 1851 William II was living in Dundas, Canada West. This could have been Dundas County (Ontario) or the town of Dundas (Ontario). By 1855, he was living in Poland, N.Y. William II married 18 Jan. 1854 at Chautaugua Co., N.Y. to Sarah Elizabeth Simpson. He died in 1884. Sarah Elizabeth was born in 1836, and died in 1890. Children:

1.1. Frances Little born 1855, died age 6 years.

1.2. Addison William Little III, b 4 April 1857, died 1927, married in 1885 to Lilly Ely Little (1865-1946) Child:

1.2.1. Edwin Addison Little 1888-1961, married in 1927 to Evea June Sherwin 1905-1987. These are Sherwin Little’s parents.

1.3. Freeman Deloss Little born 31 Oct 1863, never married, died 1908

    1.4. Jenny May Little b 13 Feb 1861, d 13 Sept. 1881, Married in 1877 to Everett A. Rider.

1.2. Samuel Little, born c 1826 in County Armagh, Ireland) Samuel “went West.”

1.3. James Little, born c1828 in County Armagh, Ireland. James died 23 Nov. 1890, Kennedy, N.Y.

1.4. Matilda Little, born 1829 in Ireland, died 1 October 1830, buried 2 October 1830 at Aubingny, Levis, Quebec.

The burial record is attached, provided by Dale Wright. Note that they had another child named Matilda (No. 1.7). It was common for families to name a child after one that died.

1.5. Francis Little, born c1830-1831 in Ireland or Quebec, died Hanover, N.H. on 25 Jan, 1873, He married c1850 probably at Hanover to Maria S. Merrill. They had 11 children:

    • Charles Little born 1850,
    • Harriett Little born 1852,

1.6. Thomas Little, born 9 Nov. 1833 in Melbourne, Quebec, baptized 4 Jan 1834 at the C of E. Sherbrooke, Quebec.. Went West. The baptism record was signed by father William Little, and his wife was identified as Jane Caldwell. Their residence was identified as Melbourne. Source : Drouin Collection on ancestry.com.

1.7. Matilda Little, born Nov. 1835 in Quebec, died 1900, buried Kennedy, N.Y. Married Hiram Marsh. Children: -Walter Marsh, -Carrie Marsh m Silas Remington - Ella Mae Marsh b 25 Oct 1861, died Jamestown, N.Y. on 3 March 1950, married Oscar Sweet..

1.9. Possibly Roderick Little, who went to N.Y. with his brother 1.1. William Little II to seek work building railroads. Roderick may have moved on to the oildfields of Pennsylvania, possibly at Titusville, where he died from foul play.

Further information on the the above William Little I and Jane Caldwell of Melbourne, Quebec and their descendants, and data sources can be found at Appendix I: ”Genealogy of William Little and his descendants,” compiled by the late Alfred W. Little, of Silver Spring, Maryland (the brother of Sherwin Little who was a DNA match with Mark Scott -a descendant of the Littles of Megantic County, Quebec).

WILLIAM (l) LITTLE , born probably Ireland, about 1797, occupation unknown, died probably Canada 1835; married about 1820, JANE CALDWELL, born probably Ireland, about 1797, died Poland, Chautauqua Co., N.Y., April 11, 1884, age 87 (Headstone, see below); married, second, in Shipton, Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada December 19,1837, John Simpson, born Ireland about 1800, died, probably Poland, N.Y., 1855-1860 (census records).

WILLIAM LITTLE signed a land petition as a landowner in Stanstead Quebec on 20 May, 1830. His signature appears in records at the Church of England, Shipton, Sherbrooke, Quebec in 1834 listing his residence as Melbourne. He is listed as deceased in the record of his son, Robert’s baptism on May 20, 1836. Jane Caldwell’s signature is a mark.

Census information establishing basic information regarding this family: New York Census, Poland Town, 1845, page 6. John Simpson household on 10 acres of improved land. Three males, one married female under 45, two females unmarried and under 16; no males subject to militia; one qualified to vote; six born in Great Britain or its possessions; two children between 5 and 16; three in common school. [This census data plus data from the death records of Matilda Little Marsh (Poland Town Clerk's office) establish the arrival of the John Simpson family to this area as being between 1843 when Edwin was born in Canada and the taking of the 1845 census]. *If these six inhabitants are the five Simpsons plus Matilda Little, where are the six Little boys?*

U.S. Census, Poland Town, N.Y.,1850, page 302. Family 79. John Simpson household. John Simpson, farmer, 48, and Jane Simpson, 47, both born in Ireland; George Simpson, son, 11, born in Canada; the following, all Littles, all born in Canada: William, 26; Samuel, 24;9 James, 22; Francis 20; Matilda, 17; Thomas, 15; Robert, 13. Living on the Silas K.Ferry farm nearby Family 91 (census, p. 303) are Eliza J. Simpson, 9 and Edwin Simpson, 7, both born in "Lower Canada".

N.Y. Census, Poland, N.Y., 1855, p. 13: June 14, 1855, family 103. John (naturalized voter and land owner) and Jane Simpson, with George, Eliza J., and Edwin Simpson, all here 10 years, the parents born in Ireland, the children in Canada. Also in the house are two 'stepsons', both born in Canada: Thomas Little, age 19, here 6 years and Robert Little, age 17, here [difficult to read] 1 (?)or 7 years. All residents were recorded as aliens with the exception of John Simpson.

The 1860 census for Poland (p. 155) recorded family 480 (William Little, 36, with wife Sarah and children); nearby family 482 headed by Jane Simpson, age 60 with George, Eliza J., Edwin Simpson, and James Little, age 30; and nearby, family 483, Hiram and Matilda Marsh and two children, ages three and two). It is surmised that John Simpson died at a time between the 1855 and 1860 census enumeration.

The 1865 census for Poland (p. 3 and 5) reveals that several family members had not strayed far from each other. William and Sarah Little and children were recorded as family 19; Hiram and Matilda Marsh with children Walter, 8, Carrie 7, and Ella, 3, as family 26; family 28 was headed by Lamont and Eliza Wheeler with two other family members residing there: Edwin Simpson and Jane Simpson, 68, widow. The 1865 census is quite revealing in that the number of children and marriages were recorded. Jane Simpson had been married twice and she was the mother of ten children. [It is difficult to avoid the conclusion that Jane Simpson had seven children by William Little and three by John Simpson. Following William, Samuel, James, and Francis Little, Matilda Little was born 1833; Thomas Little, Nov.9, 1833; Robert Little, Feb. 7, 1836; then George Simpson, 1839; Eliza Jane Simpson, 1841; and Edwin Simpson, about 1843. Another factor leading to this conclusion is the 1855 census in which Thomas and Robert Little were identified as the stepsons of John Simpson. Additionally, clustered about the headstone marking Jane Simpson's grave is a footstone marked 'James' adjacent to a headstone identifying the graves of Matilda L. Marsh and her husband Hiram J. Marsh-members of a family close in death as in life].

The 1875 New York census indicates that Jane Simpson, mother-in-law, was living with Lamont Wheeler and his wife, Eliza, and daughter, Belle, age 9. (Family 268, page 31). Next door, family 269, was the family of Hiram and Matilda Marsh and their children, Walter, Carrie, and Ella. The 1880 census (p. 547) recorded Jane Simpson, 83 years, residing with Eliza Wheeler, 37, and Belle, 14. [**Where is Lamont Wheeler? Dead?]

Jane Simpson died April 11, 1884, age 87. (Headstone, Lot 54, Myrtle Cemetery, Kennedy, N.Y.). On the same plot are footstones marked "Eliza", "Father", "Mother", "James", and a prominent headstone with the inscription 'MARSH- Matilda L. 1833-1900 and Hiram J. 1834-1905'.

The 1900 Census for Poland (Vol. 20, Enumeration District 117, sheet 6), recorded the Hiram Marsh household with wife, Matilda, 64, born in English Canada, Nov. 1835, and Eliza J. Wheeler, boarder, 58, born in English Canada , Feb., 1842. [It is interesting to note that whenever the Canadian birthplace was specified by the Littles in census reports, the terms English Canada or Lower Canada were used. Upper Canada, signifying the upper reaches of the St. Lawrence River, is mostly an English domain, whereas Lower Canada was and is the French-speaking area. English Canada seems to be an ambiguous term, suggesting any of the areas where English was the predominant language or culture. However the two terms (Lower Canada and English Canada) combined are more precise geographically, pointing to the English townships of Quebec or at least to areas east of, say, Ottawa].

Children of William and Jane Caldwell Little: (U.S. and N.Y. Census records with some birthdates extrapolated from ages on census records and from baptismal records from the Church of England in Shipton, Sherbrooke, Quebec. In the 1850 census, family 79, Poland, page 11, all children reported as being born in Lower Canada).

    • 1. William, born Aug. 11, 1821 (Gravestone, Lot 75, Myrtle Cemetery, Kennedy, N.Y.).
    • 2. Samuel, born about 1826. (Census records). Went West (Lilly Ely Little 'Family Tree').
    • 3. James, born about 1827, died Kennedy, N.Y. "killed by cars" Nov. 23, 1890, age 62 (Poland Town death records). Probably the "James" buried in Myrtle Cemetery alongside Matilda and Hiram Marsh and Jane Simpson.
    • 4. Francis, born 1828, died Hanover, N.H. Jan. 25, 1873, age 45; married, probably Hanover in l850, Maria S. Merrill, born, Grantham, New Hampshire, 1837. (Hanover N.H. Vital Statistics). Eleven children: Charles, born 1850; Harriett, born 1852; Carrie, born 1858 [this being the Carrie Little McDaniels, who, accompanied by her nephew, Stanley, visited the Littles in Frewsburg, N.Y. in 1910]; Emma, born about 1859; Ellen, born 1860; Edwin, born Sept. 2, 1864; Mary E., born 1859; Francis Bertram, born 1862; George Robert, born 1867, married Maud Isabelle Smith, (parents of Robert and Margaret Little, both living in Concord, N.H. in 1983); Francis Melvin, born July 24, 1872, (father of Stanley Little, born 1904, living in Concord, N.H. in 1983); Frances Marion, born July 24, 1872, died Dec. 21, 1890. (bulk of data from census, Hanover Town records, and State Vital records in Concord, N.H. plus personal contact with three living Littles (Stanley, Robert, and Margaret) in Concord in 1983.
    • The death records of Francis Little: died Jan. 25, 1873, age 45, died of an abcess on the brain, born Canada, father, William Little, birthplace unknown, mother Jane, born Grantham (Hanover Town Records).

    • 5. Matilda, born Canada 1833, died, age 67, Poland Town July 17, 1900, acute Bright's disease; in United States 55 years; father, William Little; mother, Jane Little, both born in Canada (Poland Town death records); married about 1856, Hiram J.Marsh (1834-1905). (Myrtle Cem., Lot 54, Kennedy, N.Y.).Children: Walter; Carrie married Silas Remington (from L.E.Little 'Family Tree'); Ella Mae, born Oct. 25, 1861, died Jamestown Mar. 3, 1950; married Oscar Sweet (dates from Delbert Mee of Jamestown, New York a grandson of Ella Sweet).
    • 6. Thomas, born November 9, 1833. (Church of England, Shipton Quebec). 'Went West" (LEL, 'Family Tree").
    • 7. Robert, born Canada, Feb. 7, 1836 (Church of England, Shipton, Quebec), [1900 Census, age 58, born Feb. 1842 in French Canada, residing Ellington], died Ellington, N.Y., age 77, Feb. 1, 1915 of chronic vascular heart disease; parents "Little" and "Jane", both born in Canada; married Feb., 1863, Asenath Lydle, born Poland Town Feb. 9, 1846, died Ellington, N.Y. Nov. 7, 1922, daughter of Luther and Mary (Hitchcock) Lydle. (Ellington Town Records and Lilly Ely Little Date Book). Both are buried in Riverside Cemetery, Lot 83A, Kennedy, N.Y. Children: 1. Don Erie Little, born May, 1864, died 1944 (middle name and dates from Shirley Little Payne) married Libby Barker (no issue), then Carrie Hoard Forbes. (Don's son, Robert, is the father of Shirley (Little) Payne of Kennedy, N.Y.; 2. Dora Little, born 1867; married, 1890, Will Carpenter, removing to Granville, Ohio; 3. Erma Little, born Aug. 1879 (1900 Census); married Fred Dye of Conewango Valley (Shirley L. Payne), 4. Guy Little, born Sept. 1885 (1900 Census). (Information regarding childrens' marriages from Lilly E. Little 'Family Tree' and Shirley L. Payne. Emma and Guy data in 'Family Tree' is damaged and unreadable).

It is of interest to note that, after the above information had been obtained largely from census records, vital records, cemetery headstones, etc., an important discovery was made in the spring of 1996 in Frewsburg, N.Y. by Nancy Lou Kyle Pabody as she removed old family possessions from the basement of the home of her mother, Ruth Little Kyle. A few sheets of lined paper, molded and damaged along one edge, and entitled 'Family Trees as told to me by Mother' are signed 'Brendice'. [Brendice Pearl Little Long, eldest child of Lilly Victoria Ely Little]. In this undated information provided sometime after May 14, 1927, Lilly Ely Little indicated that "Little married in Ireland to Jane (?), emigrated to Canada, thence to N.H., thence to Chaut. County. William married Sarah Elizabeth Simpson; Samuel and Thomas 'went on west from here'; Matilda married Hiram Marsh; Robert married Cynthia [sic] Lydle; James [looks like "wife died", remainder unreadable because of water damage]; Francis. [unreadable because of damage]". Despite the damage it is apparent that no additional children were recorded, such as a Roderick Little nor for that matter the Simpson children, who presumably were half-siblings of the seven Little children.

[Roderick is the reported name of a brother who, family legend has it, accompanied William 2 Little to New York State as they sought work on the railroads. (Letter from Ruth Little Kyle, July 3, 1971). Nancy Lou Kyle remembers family speculation that Roderick may have gone to seek his fortune in the oilfields of Pennsylvania, only to be a victim of foulplay there. (Personal conversation, March, 1995). Yet, the historic oil strike by Edwin L. Drake at Titusville, Pennsylvania occurred in 1859, raising the question of the whereabouts of Roderick in 1850 and 1855. The name Roderick Little does not appear in the index of Civil War Union Volunteers at the U.S. Archives]. **Check U.S. Regular Army. [Perhaps the name Roderick was a middle name of Samuel or Thomas].

The journey of Thomas and Samuel Little to the West could have been encouraged by such advertisements as those of the Great American Lakeshore Railroads which in 1855-56 offered four daily passenger trains from Buffalo to various points including Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis (Bruce Catton. New History of the Civil War. New York: Viking, 1996, p. 6).

Children of John and Jane Caldwell (Little?) Simpson, all born in Canada:

    • 1.George, born 1839. At the age of 23 he enlisted on July 28, 1862 in Co. A, 112 Regt., N.Y. Infantry. Described as being born in Canada, 6 feet 1 1/2 inches tall, dark hair and complexion. Died of 'disease' at Jacksonville (Fla.) General Hospital , Mar. 30, 1864. Personal effects, including a canteen, pocket Testament, plug tobacco, and five lottery tickets, were handed over to Lamott (sic) Wheeler at Jacksonville. (Military records, U.S. Civil War Volunteers, U.S. Archives)
    • 2.Eliza Jane, born about 1841, died after May, 1919 (LEL Datebook May 1919 refers without context to Eliza Simpson Wheeler); married, Busti, N.Y., Sept. 30, 1860, Lamont Wheeler. (Jamestown Journal). One child, Belle, born about 1866, died after taking of 1880 census. "Aunt Eliza", in attendance at the birth of Frances Little, persuaded the parents to name the new-born Frances Belle in memory of Eliza's late daughter. (see Notes below).
    • 3.Edwin, born about 1843. Enlisted for three years with the 112th New York Volunteers on August 8, 1862.(information provided to census taker, 1865 New York Census). N.B. There is no record of Edwin Simpson or Simson in the Index to Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Soldiers, N.Y. at the U.S. Archives. Nor is his name on New York Muster Rolls published by the Adjutant General's Office, State of New York. Where was he in 1865 and 1870? The 1870 census is not indexed. Thomas and Sam'l Little are not in Ohio or Indiana in 1880 census.**

    NOTES

[The federal census index for 1810 contained no pertinent Littles in western New York. However, the 1820 census enumerated a Robert Little household in Harmony, Chautauqua Co., with one male 10-15, one 16-18, one 16-25 and two 45 or over and one female 10-15, and one 16-25 with one person being an unnaturalized citizen. (Census, p. 83). The 1830 Robert Little household, still in Harmony, contained one male 40-49; two females under 5, two 5-9, two 10-15, one 30-39. ( p. 363). The 1830 census also enumerated nearby in Harmony (p. 364) a William Little household with one male under 5, one 30-39; one female 10-14 and one 30-39. The 1840 census for Harmony (p. 11) recorded the household of Lydia Little with one female 5-9, three 10-14, and one 40-49] **Check N.Y. Census for off years.

[On April, 1815, a Robert Little bought in Lot 9 of Ellicott Township, being the 23rd purchaser; the first being Matthew Prendergast in 1807. (Illustrated Atlas. History of Chautauqua County, New York, 1881, page 15.) This transaction is also described in Livsey;. lot 9 is located near the intersection of Camp and Swanson Streets in Jamestown. It should be remembered, however, that many of those who purchased from the Holland Land Company never resided on the land, or for that matter never made the payments in order to legally own the land. (Karen Livsey, Western New York Land Transactions, 1804-1824. Baltimore: GPC, 1991, p. 139). The Robert Little in Harmony, 1820 could well be the same person who transacted with the Holland Land Co. in 1815 to buy land in Ellicott. *Were these Littles related to our family?*

Edwin 4 (Winnie), according to the family, was named after an uncle, Edwin- probably Edwin Simpson, (Addison's half-uncle), son of John and Jane Simpson. In the Eight Little Littles, Ruth Little Kyle recalls her father's Aunt Eliza being in attendance at the birth of Frances Belle Little. And Lilly Little's memory book to Francis Belle Little, dated 1923, states that Aunt Eliza Wheeler begged that Frances be named Belle after her own dead daughter. in possession of Nancy Lou Kyle). "Aug. 28, 1902. All went to Robert Little's to Little-Simpson reunion." (Lilly Ely Little notes to Edwin Addison Little, Dec. 1923; in possession of writer). This event was recalled in a 'memory book', Lest We Forget, a chronicle of the early life of each of the Little children. Presumably Lilly gave such a personalized history to each of her children. Aside from the 'Family Trees' as dictated by Lilly Ely Little to her daughter Brendice, this is one of the few references concerning any of William Little's brothers or sisters. Perhaps earlier diaries (assuming they exist) would make references to James and Matilda, who were living locally, as well as to the two boys who went west', and to Eliza's brother, Edwin Simpson, who presumably survived the Civil War period.

Francis (2) Little, brother of our William (2), removed to New Hampshire after the 1850 census was taken in Chautauqua County, married Maria S. Merrill with whom he had eleven children, one of whom, Francis Melvin was the father of an only-child, Stanley Little. Inasmuch as Francis Melvin was unable to provide for his son, Stanley was raised by his widowed aunt, Carrie Little McDaniels. It was Carrie, accompanied by Stanley, who visited the Addison and Lilly Little family in 1910. [Ruth Little Kyle had recalled the visit; and Lilly Ely Little had included an entry in her 1923 memory book to Frances Belle Little: "Dec., 1910. Mrs. Carrie Little McDaniels, Stanley Little, and Aunt Eliza", evidently referring to the visit]. Stanley, residing in Concord, N.H. in 1983, stated that Carrie had died in 1959. He and two first cousins, Robert Little and Margaret Little, knew very little of their ancestry when I visited them in 1983.

Frank and Maria S. Little were involved in land transactions in Hanover, N.H. during the period 1866-1870 (Grafton County Deeds 297:72, 312:405, 316:545). However, there are no Grafton County land records in the names of William Little or John Simpson.

In the Family Tree notes Lilly Ely Little indicated that 'Little' [Addison's father] came to Chautauqua County from Canada via New Hampshire. Hanover, N.H. is approximately 100 aerial miles from the Quebec border, an area known as the Eastern Townships where many English-speaking people lived; directly west of the Quebec-Ontario border along the St. Lawrence River are the United Counties, one of the three being County Dundas. [A search of marriages, land records, and wills in Sullivan County, N.H. in 1994 proved fruitless. If William and Jane Little or John and Jane Simpson used this area of New Hampshire as a point of entry from Canada the records remain to be found].

WILLIAM (2) LITTLE, son of William and Jane Caldwell Little, born Aug. 11, 1821, probably in Canada, died Ellicott, N.Y., Oct. l, 1884, "aged 63 years, l month, 21 days". (Gravestone, Lot 75, Myrtle Cem.,Clark's Corner, Rt. 62, Kennedy, N.Y.); married Jan. 18, 1854 Chautauqua Co., N.Y. SARAH ELIZABETH SIMPSON, born July l9-20, l836, Chautauqua Co., died Poland, N.Y. Jan. 10, 1890, age 54-5-22, daughter of John J. Simpson, a blacksmith, farmer and farm laborer, and Sarah A. Fairbanks Simpson. (U.S. and State Census and Town of Poland Death Certificate 63). (LEL Datebook, referring to her mother-in-law Sarah Elizabeth Simpson Little, born May 26, 1836).

As noted above, William Little, age 26, was enumerated with the John and Jane Simpson household in Poland Township in 1850. An interesting find, again by Nancy Lou Kyle Pabody, establishes William's whereabouts at least briefly after 1850. This discovery, a Holy Bible, the bulk of it completely destroyed by moisture damage, but intact and in good condition from Paul's Epistle to Titus through Revelations, was found in the spring of 1996 in the basement of the home of Ruth Little Kyle. The end paper has the following inscription: 'William Little's Book Lebanon, N.H. William Little's Book Dundas Canada West December 25, 1851'. [There is a Dundas Town, adjoining Hamilton at the western end of Lake Ontario. However, there is also a Dundas County on the St. Lawrence River at the eastern end of the province of Ontario, roughly south of Ottawa. Either site could be termed Canada West. Dundas Town is probably 100 miles northwest of Chautauqua County, New York. Dundas County is 200 miles northwest of Lebanon and Hanover, N.H. where Francis Little settled].The l855 New York Census recorded in Poland Township, family 115, the household of William Little, age 29; farmer, naturalized voter, born Canada; 2 years here, living with his wife Sarah, age l9, 19 years here, and 2 months old Frances A. in a log house occupied also by Frank M. Simpson, farmer, age 22, 22 years here [presumably Sarah's brother], his wife,Phylinda, and child, Ellen A.

The 1850 and 1855 census data taken with the Bible notation suggests that William and probably Francis removed after the 1850 census enumeration to Lebanon, N.H. Further, that William was residing or visiting in Dundas, Canada at the end of 1851, and returned to Poland, N.Y. by 1853, when he made a land purchase.

[The census takers recorded in 1860, 1870 (p. 163) and in 1890 that William was born in Ireland; in l850, l855 and in 1880 that William was born in Canada, and in 1880 it was noted that William's parents had been born in Ireland. William's grandson, Edwin Addison Little, in a letter dated August 6, 1958, wrote that "(William) came from northern Ireland, worked on the railroads in Canada when they were constructed. . ."].

William's first purchase of land (Sept. 16, 1853) in Chautauqua Co. was an 80 acre parcel on the southwest corner of Lot 10 in the Town of Poland. The $530 parcel was bounded on the north by property owned by John Simpson. (Mayville Courthouse, Deed 64-278). [A land ownership map of 1854 located the William Little land at the southern end of the present Fisher Hill Road, adjoining the 'J.J. Simpson' property, John J. Simpson being William's future father-in-law. The J. Simpson farm, presumably John Simpson, is located directly east on the present Page Road (Map of Chautauque Co. N.Y. Philadelphia: Collins and Keeney, 1854)]. On April 2, 1861, Emory and Lucy Mattocks conveyed 40 acres in Poland to William in consideration of $480.00. (Deed 90:140). On April 30, 1861, Wellington and Eliza Jewell deeded l 3/4 acres in Poland for $50.00. (89:25). On April 30, 1869 William received from Alexander and Mary Wilson 98 acres plus 2.64 acres in the Town of Ellicott for $3000.00. (128:365). This parcel is located in the extreme northeast corner of Ellicott, on the east side of Wilson Hollow Road, designated as "W. Little 102 acres". (Atlas of Chautauqua Co., N.Y. New York: F.W. Beers Co, 1881, p. 99). [This is undoubtedly the location of the site which the Little family called 'Johnny Cake Run'].

In her letter to the writer of July 3, 1971, Ruth Little Kyle recalled, "The description of my Grandfather Little [William 2] sounds more like a 'dour old Scotchman' rather than a happy-go- lucky Irishman. Father [Addison 3 William Little] was born on April 4, 1857. At that time his father [William 2] was rafting logs down the Allegheny River into Pittsburg, sometimes going farther onto the Ohio River . . . Before he left he told my grandmother that the baby, whose birth was imminent, had better be a boy, or else. I don't know what else, but happily the baby was a boy and apparently he was satisfied."

A farmer for most of his life, William Little and his family lived in the Town of Poland until the purchase of the Wilson property in 1869, inasmuch as the succeeding censuses show the family residing in Ellicott.

The will of William Little, dated Feb.16, 1884 and recorded Dec.1, 1884, left the estate to his wife, Sarah E. Little, and two sons, Addison William and Freeman D. (Probate records, Chaut. Co. 8:188). Sarah's will of 1886, recorded Mar. 3, 1890, left her effects to her granddaughter, Maud E. Rider of Ellicott. (9:502).

Children of William and Sarah (Simpson) Little, all born in Poland Township:

    • 1. Frances, born 1855, died at age of 6 years (Gravestone Lot 75, Myrtle Cemetery).
    • 2. Addison William Little, born Apr. 4, 1857.
    • 3. Jennie May, born Feb. 13, l861, died Sept. 13, 1881; married, Sept. 1877, Everett A. Rider (LEL Datebook); one child Maud Elizabeth., born Nov. 14, 1879. Maud married, first, Dr. D. Dwight Calkins; married, second, Philip F. Jarvis. (Notes of Lilly E. Little).
    • 4.Freeman Deloss, born Oct. 31, 1863, died, unmarried, October 17,1908. (Gravestone, Lot 75, 1908 diary and Datebook of Lilly E. Little). (See below for extracts from Lilly E. Little regarding Freeman).

N.B. Little family lore had it that William Little and his siblings came south from Canada to work on the railroads as they were being constructed, eventually settling in the United States. In an early history of Lebanon, N.H., Daniel Webster is reported to have made a speech there about 1847-48 to the effect that railroad construction in New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York would make it possible to travel by train from Boston to Ogdensburg, New York (which is on the St. Lawrence River less that ten miles upstream from Dundas County, Ontario, Canada). The construction of the railroad at the western terminus at Ogdensburg began in March, 1848. Rail service to Montpelier, Lebanon, and on to Boston began in Sept., 1850. That young Canadian men living along the river responded to handbills advertising for able-bodied laborers to build the railroad to Lake Champlain and beyond seems highly plausible. One can imagine how life was in the 1840s. Local inhabitants would have had friends and relatives on both sides of the river, which could be crossed by rowboat part of the year and by foot on the ice during the winter. Goods and services would have been exchanged, and young men undoubtedly courted and married the girls on the other shore. [Had William Little been visiting or living with his brother, Francis and family in Lebanon, N.H. in 1851 he could have easily taken the train to Ogdensburg to visit acquaintances or relatives in Canada in December of that year].

However, a search of census and cemetery records in Dundas County has failed to find pertinent Little or Simpson names. Also in the summer of 1999 the writer searched to no avail the land records for the four townships that make up the county (Matilda, Winchester, Mountain, Williamsburg). [Land records in the possession of Mrs. Lynne O'Brien Cook, Dundas County Genealogy and Loyalist Resource Center, 3 Augusta St., Morrisburg, Ontario). However, this family could well have been tenant farmers or loggers with no land holdings, or they could have been residing in an adjoining county. The 1851 census contains the family of Benjamin Little, blacksmith. Although Canada conducted an 1842 census, there are no returns for Dundas County. Land records are not easily searched in Canada as they are in the United States. A James Liddle/Lidelle owned land in Mountain township, listed as a grantee in 1832 and 1836 on concession 1-19 and in 1852 on concession 3-15. A James Little age 19-39 is recorded as having served in the Dundas Militia, Dec. 29, 1828 [RGB, IB2, Vol. 29:92 in Men of Upper Canada, Militia Rolls 1828-29, Toronto, Ontario Gen. Soc., 1995].

    APPENDIX II

IRISH RECORDS FOR LITTLES & RELATED FAMIIES WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT BE RELEVANT

This new information connection the Littles to Tynan Parish, Co. Armagh makes it possible to search Co. Armagh records to find any parishes where the surnames Little and McCullough were co-located in the records. Unfortunately, there is a limited amount of data available on the web, unless you are willing to pay for it. A new search at PRONI in Belfast might well find the family in parish baptism and marriage records. I did find on the web, at free sites:

    • -The 1796 Flax Growers List for County Armagh (with both Littles and McCulloughs present).
    • -The 1825-1828 Tithe Applotment Books for the parishes of Tynan, Derrynoose, and Keady (with both Littles and McCulloughs present).
    • My source for the Flax Growers List and the Tithe Applotment Books was: Connors Genealogy Project at: http://www.connorsgenealogy.net
    • I recently received two issues of Duiche Néill: Journal of the O’Neill Country Historical Society, which also have information on Littles and McCulloughs present in the same parish, along with Irvines/Irwins, Wilsons, Scotts, Gardeners and Woods. They are:
    • -Journal Issue No. 6, 1991: ``A Rent Roll of the Manor of Balteagh for the Year 1770: With Notes on the Maxwell Family and Their Descendants,” by Rev. J. M. Batchelor, Rector of Eglish and Killylea, pages 127-141. The Rent Rolls cover various townlands in Tynan Parish, Co. Armagh.
    • -Journal Issue No. 15, 2006: “Tynan Parish, Armagh, Burials and Baptisms, 1683-1733,” by Rev. J. M. Batchelor, pages 99-132. These are Church of Ireland (Episcopal) records.

Much to my amazement, the data in the above two articles included Littles, McCulloughs, Woods, Irvines, Wilsons, Scotts, and Gardeners, all living in Tynan Parish, and resident there from the 1600s to 1825, just before our Littles emigrated to Inverness Tp.

The new information, gleaned from those sources follows. I have also integrated below all the Little and Ralston records for Tynan, Derrynoose, and Keady Parishes found in my publication, The Little Family and the Ralston Family of Megantic County, Quebec, as well at data from the Tithe Applotment Books forTynan, Derrinoose, and Keady parishes. The only reason for including Keady Parish is because Henry Ralston I (who married Jane Little) is said to have been born in Keady Parish.

Background on Land Ownership of the Manor of Balteagh:

The Manor of Balteagh was forfeited by the O’Neill’s in 1600, when they were defeated by the British, and fled Ireland in ‘The Flight of the Earls.’ The Manor, which included the County Armagh Parish of Tynan, Village of Killylea, and Parish of Derrynoose, was reassigned to Trinity College Dublin in 1615. Robert Maxwell II, from Calderwood, near Glasgow, leased 20 townlands of the Manor of Balteagh consisting of 23,000 acres from Trinity College in 1625, including much of Tynan Parish, Derrynoose Parish, and Killylea Village. These 20 townlands stayed in Maxwell hands until the last Maxwell died unmarried in 1819. At that time, the 20 townlands were divided up between five or six of the last Maxwell’s great-nephews.

    • -In 1819, great-nephew Col. James Strong inherited Darton Townland, Tynan Village, and Tynan Abbey. Col. James Strong’s great-grandson and his son were assassinated by the IRA at Tynan Abbey in 1981. Another of his son’s still owns part of his father`s holdings today.
    • -In 1819, great-nephew William J. Armstrong inherited the townlands of Killylea Village, Balteagh, Derryhaw, and Dernalea. In 1824 and again in 1830, and in 1834 Armstrong increased the rents of his tenants, which may have caused some of them to emigrate. From the 1880s onward, some of the lands were sold off to former tenants, but an Armstrong descendant still holds some of their former lands today.
    • -In 1819 other great-nephews inherited other townlands in Tynan Parish.

    TYNAN PARISH, CO. ARMAGH

Note: The following townlands of Tynan Parish were not part of the Balteagh Manor. Rather they were owned by the Earl of Caledon, whose manor was at Caledon Village, Aghaloo Parish, Co. Tyrone (at the border with Tynan Parish): Cortynan (Woodhill), Drumhilery, and Tullyglush-Nevin, all in Tynan Parish. Aghaloo Parish was the place of origin of the Hendersons, Davidsons, and Wrights of the 2nd and 3rd ranges of Inverness Tp., Megantic Co., Quebec. The Littles of Co. Armagh also settled on these same ranges of Inverenss Tp., as well as on the 4th Range of Inverness Tp. The Hendersons, Davidsons and Wrights may have had some relationship with the Littles of Tynan Parish since up until about 1780, both Tynan and Aghaloo residents attended the C of I in Tynan Village. And they would have attended each other’s weekly Market Day right up until they emigrated. Caledon Village and Tynan Village are about 1 ½ miles apart. And there were Hendersons and Davidsons also living in Tynan Parish.

Note that by law, all baptisms, marriages, and burials in Ireland up to the 1850s had to be conducted in the Established Church of Ireland (C of I) (Episcopal). So a person’s religion can’t be assumed by a C of I baptism, marriage or burial. Some Presbyterian ministers also recored the marriages in their registry, but it wasn’t legal to do so.

    RALSTON

No records found, and not in 1825 Tithe Applotment Books for Tynan Parish.

    End of Tynan Parish

As regards the preceding records of Tynan Parish, either:

    a) They are NOT our Littles, McCulloughs, Scotts, Wilsons, Irvines, Woods, Gordaniers etc.

    OR

    b) Our John Little I and Margaret McCullough both came from Tynan, and our John Little II married a Woods also from Tynan Parish, and our James Little married an Irvine from Tynan Parish, and our Margaret Little drew all three of her husbands (Wilson, Scott, and Gordanier) from her home parish of Tynan. The confluence in Tynan parish of all the names we need (except for Ralston) certainly suggests a high probability that it is the correct parish of origin for our Littles. But then again, the following parishes of Aghaloo, Derrinoose and Keady Parishes can’t be totally discounted. . It should be noted that 1st Keady Presbyterian at Drumhillery served the Presbyterians of all of Tynan Parish, Keady Parish, Derrinoose Parish, and even the southern half of Aghaloo Parish, County Tyrone.
