MELROSE JOHN and his wife MARY EWART STUART (related to William Ewart Gladstone), lived in Roxburghshire, Scotland and had 4 sons as follows :
Alexander (see # 1 below), William (see # 2 below), John and James. Alex and William came to North America. John and James remained in Scotland. James had 5 children as follows : James, Williamina, Mary, Janet and Agnes.

home of Robert Cochrane. Alexander's obituary requested
that Chirnside, Berwickshire and Allantown, Scotland
newspapers copy the particulars of his death. There is a
tombstone in the Chirnside Cemetery, Berwickshire in memory
of James Melrose, 1798- 1882, builder, his wife Eliza
Johnston 1804-1853 and their children James, John,
Elizabeth, Jane (Mrs John Taylor) died Allanton, and Agnes.
This could well have been a brother to Alexander. Alexander
was a stonemason and master builder, Came first to
Syracuse, New York and worked on the building of the Erie
Canal, also built lighthouses in Anticosti,`Quebec and in
the Gaspe Penninsula of Quebec, m in Scotland to WILLIAMINA
FORBES, b 1805 in SCOTLAND, Roxboroughshire, FC, d 1879.
They settled in Inverness Tp in 1830, on the 7th Range.
Apparently one of Alexander's brothers (James or John ?)
had been with Dr Livingstone in Africa from 1840-1852. When
he returned to Britain, he was knighted by Queen Victoria.

In a story in the Montreal Gazette titled 'Growth and Development,' by W. H. Lambly, he reported that the registrars of Inverness were:
In 1831, Tonny Anderson was the 1st Registrar of Inverness. He went on to become an MLA, and Attorney General of Lower Canada.
In 1832, the 2nd Registrar was Thomas W. Lloyd
In 1834, 3rd Registrar was G. M. Muir
In 1835, 4th Registrar was F. Meyer
In 1842, 5th Registrar was Richard A. Fortier
In 1844, 6th Registrar was John R. Lambly
In 1862, the 7th Registrar was William Harvard Lambly, appointed in 1862.
The oldest clergy reserve title was for lot 7, 9th range of Leeds Tp., in favour of Zacharias Goff of Quebec City, dated 15 Aug 1831. Very many of the titles were of the county were for one peppercorn, but after the abolution of the corn laws, titles were given in free and common soccage.

The above Milliken may have been related to Weston F Milliken, a prominent Portland, Maine merchant who, in the 1870s-1890s, was an active investor in LC timber lots. As part owner, he handled the productions of the large C S Clark lumber mills. Their business office was in Sherbrooke, Que, but the company had timber rights throughout the Eastern Townships, including Megantic Co. They would have used the Becancoeur River to get logs out, then shipped by rail to Island Pond, Vt, then transferred to the Central Vermont Railway for delivery to Portland, Maine and shipping overseas.

MIMNAUGH: Obituary notice:
'Robert Graham Sr., died 8 Apr. 1900, 11th Range of Inverness. He arrived in Canada 15 June 1831, age 13, with stepfather James McGill, mother and 3 sisters. James McGill was a commuted pensionner, who received a grant for lot 18, 11th range of Inverness. Already on the same range when they arrived were the families of Mimnaugh, Wilton, Hackett , Currie, Plummer and Percy. In 1831, their nearest mill was at Goff's on the Craig Road, or Keoughs mill in Ireland Township. They got their flour at McElroy's store in St-Sylvestre. Many expended all and left before the first crop. The first schoolhouse on the 11th range was on lot 20. The teacher was Dr. James Currie. Robert Graham Sr. married Catherine Campbell, daughter of John Campbell . '

They provided funding, along with the Hon George Irvine,
that aided the Johnson brothers in launching their Asbestos
Mines at Thetford, Que. John Mooney was President of

He was also listed in 1861 census for his Inverness, his home township, as age 80. So he was born either in 1772 or 1782. Is listed in the census as some type of doctor, but census writing illegible. He was likely a botanical/herbal medicine man.

In 1831, Tonny Anderson was the 1st Registrar of Inverness. He went on to become an MLA, and Attorney General of Lower Canada.
In 1832, the 2nd Registrar was Thomas W. Lloyd
In 1834, 3rd Registrar was G. M. Muir
In 1835, 4th Registrar was F. Meyer
In 1842, 5th Registrar was Richard A. Fortier
In 1844, 6th Registrar was John R. Lambly
In 1862, the 7th Registrar was William Harvard Lambly, appointed in 1862.
The oldest clergy reserve title was for lot 7, 9th range of Leeds Tp., in favour of Zacharias Goff of Quebec City, dated 15 Aug 1831. Very many of the titles were of the county were for one peppercorn, but after the abolution of the corn laws, titles were given in free and common soccage.

MURPHY PETER, and MARTIN MURPHY, and MILES MURPHY were Irish RCs who signed a petition in 1825 to obtain an Irish RC priest for Frampton Tp, Quebec. Some of the Murphy's of Frampton left in 1840 to cross the Missouri plains, where they stayed one year. Then settled in the Santa Clara Valley, California. They became well known in California. One became a millionaire several times over. Another became a Senator in Washington.
