HARVEY WILLIAM b 1828 IRELAND, C of E, d 31 May 1899 of Brights Disease at Kinnears Mills, Leeds Tp., Megantic Co., m 16 Feb 1852 at the Leeds C of E to MARGARET PENNEY b 1834, RC. He was a member of the Kinnear's Mills Orange Lodge, as was his father. According to Anglo-Protestants of Megantic County , all their children were baptized C of E, but are listed at RC in the 1861 census for Leeds Tp. According to a newspaper article dated June 12, 1899 at Montreal, William Harvey's death caused quite a stir. On his deathbed, the Protestant William Harvey was visited daily by Rev. Whitelaw, a Protestant minister. Having arranged his affairs, and having given instructions regarding his funeral, where he was to be buried, he named the Protestant cemetry. He soon became unconscious, and his Roman Catholic wife of 40 years sent for the parish priest, Arthur-Adolphe Vincent, a French-Canadian. He gave Harvey the last rites. The Protestant minister protested Harvey being given extreme unction. On 2 June 1899, the day of the funeral, two graves were dug, one in the Catholic cemetery, and one in the Protestant cemetery. The Catholic priest, backed by his supporters, was there with a hearse, but the news flew like wildfire, and ten Orange Lodges turned out and carried the body to the Protestant cemetery. (The newspaper clipping was probably from the Megantic Edition of the Montreal Gazette , sometime in June or July 1899. A copy of the article was provided to me by Patti McVetty, whose McVetty ancestor was an Orange Lodge member, present at Harvey's burial.
