KELLY, MICHAEL, b Ireland, m Ann Dempsey, b Ireland. They came from County Queens (Leix/Laois), Ireland. Settled in St-Nicholas c1820, but also lived later in St-Etienne. Children:
- Margaret, maybe b Ireland
- Richard, b c1815-1817 in Ireland, bapt. St Nicholas in 1821. He moved to St-Sylvestre. Richard Kelly was the
leader of the St Sylvestre Ribbonmen in 1855, at the time
of the Corrigan Affair. Although not present at the St
Sylvestre fairgrounds when Corrigan was beaten, the C of E
minister reported Richard to the authorities, as one of the
perpetrators. He, like the other accused, was accquited of
Corrigan's murder. For an account of the murder of Robert Corrigan, see Hill Search: The Robert Corrigan Story, by Steve Cameron, 2014. Contact Steve Cameron at
Richard Kelly m on 17 Sept 1837 to Bridget Nelligan, niece of the RC priest, James Nelligan of St Sylvestre, who officiated at the marriage. At the time of the marriage, Richard Kelly was described as 'of St Nicholas.' Bridget's parents on the marriage record are recorded as Michael Nelligan and Mary Black.of Castle Gregory, Dingle, Co. Kerry. The marriage record identifies 'Michael Kelly, brother, and Ellen Delaney, cousin of the bride.' Father James Nelligan officiated at the marriage which took place in St-Sylvestre. Father James Nelligan is thought to have also had a brother, Maurice Nelligan who settled in Frampton Tp. Richard and Bridget lived on St Patrick's Range of St Sylvestre, where Richard was a miller.
- Patrick, b 1824 at St-Nicholas, m 1st at St-Sylvestre to Mary Ann Doran, and m 2nd , probably at St-Sylvestre, in 1854 to Mary Ann Devlin of St Sylvestre.
- Michael, b 1826 at St-Nicholas
- Bartholomew, b 1828 at St-Nicholas, m Mary Orr of St Sylvestre, and m 2nd to Elizabeth Colclough.
- James, b 1831 at St-Nicholas, d 1831.
- William, b 1834
- John 'Boz.' In 1855, John was living in St-Sylvestre,
and he was accused of derailing the troop train at
St-Sylvestre, during the Corrigan affair of 1855.
Note: The information on the names and dates, and locations of William Kelly and Ann Dempsey and their children (except for John) was provided by Lynn Ayres.
The information concerning the involvement of Richard and John 'Boz' Kelly in the 1855 Corrigan affair is from: John Matthew Barlow, "Fear and Loathing in Saint-Sylvestre: The Corrigan Murder Case, 1855-58," Master's thesis, Simon Fraser University, B.C., Canada, Dept of History, July 1998 (124 pages). This thesis can be obtained on loan from most Canadian University libraries, or reviewed on site.
As for the existence of John 'Boz,' Kelly as a brother to Richard Kelly, it too came from Barlow's Thesis, page 80.
It is not known if the Kellys of St-Nicholas were related to the Kellys of St-Sylvestre, but it is quite likely that they were related, given that 3 or 4 of them either married, or lived in St-Sylvestre.
For information on the Nelligans and on the 'Corrigan Affair,' contact Steve Cameron. Contact info available.

The chapel was affiliated in the 14th century to the monastery of Kilwinning, a daughter foundation of Kelso Abbey.
