CLOUSTON JAMES JACK

CLOUSTON JAMES JACK Sr b 1791 in SCOTLAND, Stromness, Orkney Islands, d 1866, buried St Pierre de Broughton RC Cemetery. James married in 1822 at St Andrews Presb Church, Quebec City to BRIDGET GARDENER b 1801, RC, from Kirkwole, SCOTLAND. James served with the Royal Artilery in Quebec City. He was probably involved in building the Craig's Rd. He received his Location Ticket, a military land grant, in 1819 for 129 acres on 6th Range of Leeds Tp, Lot 14. He appears in the 1831 census for Leeds Tsp on the same lot, is recorded as RC, married with 1 male child and 4 female children. In the 1861 census he was living in Leeds Tsp, 13th Range, 1/2 of Lot 12. It is not certain if this is the same James Clouston as the following information, however, the age fits fairly closely. There was a James Clouston who charted the Great Whale River area of the Cdn Arctic, and was recruited by the Hudson's Bay Company as a school teacher from 1808 to 1813, at a wage of 30 pounds per annum. He returned to the Orkney Islands. His diary is still being consulted for sociological studies and to settle land claims. See Publications of Hudson's Bay Record Society XXIV, page 341. Children :

  1. James Clouston Jr b 1823 Stromness, Orkney Islands, SCOTLAND, Free Church, d 1881, m in Scotland to Wilhelmina Stobbs Clouston b 1833 SCOTLAND, d 1882, bur Leeds Presb. They lived in Leeds Tp, 13th Range, Lot 2. This is probably the James Clouston, who like his father, joined the Hudson Bay Company at age 19, and was stationed at York Factory from approx. 1842 to 1855. He was selected by Dr John Rae, the arctic explorer, to join him on a trip to Boothia Land. Clouston was put in charge of 1 of 2 boats on this expedition. On this trip, in 1853, they found the first traces of the Sir John Franklin expedition. They collected 10,000 pound sterling reward, offered by the Admiralty in London. James returned to Scotland, then came to Leeds Tsp about 1858. Children :

    3. Maria Mina Isbister Clouston b 1860, bapt Leeds Presb, m in 1885 to William Harvey. (It can be noted that Isbister is an Orkney Island name. There was a Joseph Isbister of Stromness, Orkney Islands, son of a Stromness merchant, who became Chief Factor of the Hudson's Bay Company post at Albany (Henley House) and who was also Governor of Prince of Wales Fort in the 1740s. He (Joseph) retired to Quebec City in 1760 and died there in 1771.)

CLOUSTON NOTE

CLOUSTON NOTE : It should be noted that there was also a James Clouston b 1788, d 1858, married Marguerite Curodeau (Bilodeau). Their descendants live in St Romauld and St Clothilde, Quebec. This James was not able to sign his marriage certificate (illiterate). Hence it is unlikely this would be the James Clouston associated with the Hudson's Bay Company as a map charter, explorer, clerk or teacher. However, there is still a remote possibility that it is this family who were associated with the Hudson's Bay Company.

They settled first on St Catherine's Range of St Sylvestre, Lotbiniere County, later moving to the Belfast Range of St Patrice de Beaurivage. Dictionary of Canadian Biography , Vol VIII, page 169 on Robert Corrigan, says that Patrick Corrigan had 8 children, all born in Co Tyrone, Ireland, and that Patrick's wife name was GRACE McNULT. Their 7 sons who came over in 1832 included:

It is possible that he might have stayed a few years in Quebec with his brother John and married there. Robert is the subject of The Corrigan Affair. In the 1851 census, Margaret''s surname is given as Clemens. Her death record reads, "Margaret wife of Thomas Cromwell of St Sylvester departed this life on the fourth day of April Eighteen hundred and sixty and was buried on the sixth day of the same month aged forty eight years by me B. Short. In presence of James Stevenson, James Montgomery." [Leeds MÊÊgantic (Anglican Church), 1860, Image 2]

The death record of Margaret McKee (April 13, 1912 in Waterford, Caledonia, Vermont, age 66 years 5 months, birthplace Canada), gives father''s name as Thomas Cromwell, birthplace Ireland, and her mother''s maiden name as Margaret Clemens, birthplace Ireland. (Margaret Cromwell and Samuel McKee were married in 1861 in Quebec.) The death record of Prudence Cromwell Williams (January 8, 1919 in Concord, Essex, Vermont, age 78 years, 7 months, 24 days, born May 15, 1840 in Quebec) gives her father''s name as Thomas Cromwell, birthplace Ireland, and her mother''s maiden name as Margaret McKnight, birthplace Ireland.

Since just one of the above records uses the name Wallace, I wonder if Margaret''s maiden name was Clements, not Wallace.
